What are the best golf courses in Ireland?

Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Lahinch, Ballybunion and Portmarnock are the links most often ranked in the world's top fifty, and Adare Manor is the best parkland resort course in the country. When is the best time to play golf in Ireland?

Late May to mid September. June has the longest evenings, which matters more than it sounds when a late tee time still finishes in daylight. Shoulder season in April and October costs less and plays firmer, but the wind is a bigger factor.

How far ahead should I book Irish tee times?

For Royal County Down, Royal Portrush and Adare Manor, twelve to eighteen months. For most other links, six to nine months is enough. Hotels at the top of the market sell out earlier than the golf does, so book the beds in the same week you confirm the round.

The short answer

Ireland's golf is links golf, and the five destinations worth building a trip around are Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Lahinch, Ballybunion and Adare Manor. We treat each as a place rather than a tee time: how the course plays, the three days that should surround it, where to eat afterwards, and how to get the booking confirmed. Peak season runs May to September.

Peak green fees at the marquee links run roughly €420 to €550 for eighteen holes.
May, June and September give the best light and the least wind. July and August are busiest.
Most visitor tee times at the top clubs open twelve to eighteen months ahead.

If you can only build the trip around one, we default to Royal County Down for the player, Ballybunion for the pilgrim, and Adare Manor for the couple travelling together. Portrush if the calendar lines up with settled weather. Lahinch if you want the round you'll still be talking about in December.
