Adare Manor reflected in the still water of the River Maigue at golden hour

The Honeymoon

The Ireland Honeymoon

A seven-night itinerary for two. Four houses, a private driver, one day at a time.

A Georgian townhouse in Dublin, a castle on a lake, a manor on a river and a lodge above a waterfall. Long dinners, late mornings, and a week that asks nothing of you.

The short answer

What is the best Ireland honeymoon itinerary?

Seven nights across four five-star houses, with a private driver: two nights at The Merrion in Dublin, two at Ashford Castle on Lough Corrib, one at Adare Manor in Limerick, and two at Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare. Fly into Dublin, out of Shannon. Book the rooms first, 6 to 9 months ahead, and ask each hotel for a lake, river or estate-facing room by name.

The briefing

Seven nights, four houses, and not a single day that exists to get somewhere. Two nights in a Georgian townhouse in Dublin to sleep off the flight. Two at a castle on Lough Corrib. One at a manor on the River Maigue. Two above a waterfall in Kerry, where the trip is allowed to end slowly.

A driver collects you in Dublin and hands the car back to no one. Nobody navigates, nobody drives on the left after a wedding, and every afternoon has a stretch with nothing in it. That is the whole design: grand rooms, long dinners, and enough empty time that you actually notice each other.

Room names are quoted from each hotel's own website, checked 30 September 2026. Which rooms have a freestanding bath or the best view varies by date: ask reservations to name the exact room before you pay.

Day One · Dublin

Arrive, and do nothing on purpose

The overnight lands early. The only job today is to be somewhere beautiful by the time you are too tired to care.

The drive

Your driver meets you in arrivals. Dublin Airport to Merrion Street is usually 30 to 40 minutes.

  1. Morning

    Straight to the hotel

Tell The Merrion your flight number and that it is your honeymoon when you book. If the room is not ready, leave the bags, take a coffee into the interior garden and let the city wait. The Main House rooms are the restored Georgian townhouses; that is the side we ask for.

  2. Afternoon

    Sleep, then the garden

A proper sleep, not a nap you fight. Wake around four, when the light moves through the garden room and the hotel slows down with you. On our own stay this was the hour the trip started to feel like ours.

  3. Evening

    One drink, an early night

No. 23, one cocktail, a corner chair. Dinner in the hotel or in the room. Save the big table for tomorrow, when you can taste it.

For the two of you

Reserve afternoon tea for Day Two before you fly. It fills, and it is more occasion than amenity.

What couples get wrong

Booking a Michelin tasting menu for the night you land. You will be asleep by the fourth course. Push it to the second night.

Where you sleep

The Merrion, Dublin

Two nights. Ask for a Main House suite and have reservations confirm the bath and the outlook of the exact room.

Check availability

Four o'clock in the garden room, coffee going cold, nowhere either of you needs to be.

Day Two · Dublin

The Georgian city, slowly

One unhurried Dublin day: pictures, a long lunch, tea, and the dinner you came for.

  1. Morning

    Breakfast, then the National Gallery

Breakfast late. Deborah would order the smoked salmon again. The National Gallery of Ireland is a few minutes' walk from the door; give it an hour and stop at whatever holds you, not at a list.

  2. Afternoon

    St Stephen's Green, then tea

A slow loop of the Green and the Georgian squares, then back for the afternoon tea you reserved. The walls of the drawing rooms are hung with the hotel's own art collection; sit where you can see it.

  3. Evening

    The celebration dinner

Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, the Michelin-starred room inside the hotel, so the walk home is a corridor. Tell them it is your honeymoon when you book, not at the table. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.

For the two of you

Book Patrick Guilbaud for this night, not the first. It is the one Dublin reservation worth planning the trip around.

What couples get wrong

Trying to see Dublin. Two nights here is decompression, not sightseeing. The castles come next.

Where you sleep

The Merrion, Dublin

Second night. Read our first-hand stay before you choose a room.

Check availability

The corridor walk from dinner back to the room, still talking about dessert.

Day Three · Mayo

West to the castle on the lake

Out of the city and into the only arrival in Ireland that looks like a film set, because it very nearly is one.

Ashford Castle and its formal grounds beside Lough Corrib

The drive

Dublin to Cong is roughly three hours. Leave after breakfast and you arrive for a late lunch.

  1. Morning

    The long drive west

The driver takes the motorway most of the way, so sit back. Ask for one stop for coffee and nothing else. The day's reward is at the other end.

  2. Afternoon

Walk the estate before you unpack

Drop the bags and go straight down to the shore of Lough Corrib. The estate is enormous and most guests never leave the castle. The lake at the end of the afternoon is the reason you came.

  3. Evening

    The George V Dining Room

The castle's grand dining room, candlelit and formal. Dress for it. This is the night to be a little theatrical with each other.

For the two of you

Book falconry for tomorrow morning when you book the room. It is Ashford's signature experience and a genuinely intimate one: two of you, a hawk, and the woods.

What couples get wrong

Treating Ashford as one night on the way somewhere. It needs two, or you only see the castle and never the estate.

Where you sleep

Ashford Castle, Cong

Two nights. Book a Lake View Deluxe Room, or at minimum a Corrib Lake View Room. The lake is the point.

Check availability

The first look at Lough Corrib from the shore, the castle behind you and the light going gold.

Day Four · Mayo

A hawk, a lake, and a free afternoon

The one day with no packing and no driving. The most honeymoon day of the week.

A Lake View Deluxe Room at Ashford Castle with a canopied bed and window to the lake

  1. Morning

    Falconry in the woods

An hour walking the estate woodland with a hawk that flies from your glove to the trees and back. Book the earliest slot you can: the woods are quieter and the light is softer.

  2. Afternoon

Out on Lough Corrib, then the spa

A cruise on the lake, or nothing at all. Then the spa, booked as a couple before you arrive. Leave a gap after it. This is the afternoon to lose track of time.

  3. Evening

    Something simpler

After last night's grandeur, eat more quietly on the estate. Ask the concierge which of the castle's other restaurants suits the evening.

For the two of you

Book the couples' spa treatment and falconry together when you confirm the room, so the day is already shaped when you land.

What couples get wrong

Filling this day with a Connemara tour. It is beautiful and it is four hours in a car. Take the day off instead.

Where you sleep

Ashford Castle, Cong

Second night. Same room, no packing.

Check availability

The hawk landing on your glove and both of you forgetting to breathe.

Day Five · Clare and Limerick

The Cliffs, then the manor on the river

The one travel day with a view built into it: south through the Burren to the Atlantic, and on to Adare by evening.

The drive

Cong to the Cliffs of Moher is about two hours; the Cliffs to Adare about an hour and a half. The driver handles both.

  1. Morning

    Through the Burren

Leave Ashford after breakfast. The driver takes you south into the Burren, the limestone country that looks nothing like the rest of Ireland. Stop where it moves you.

  2. Afternoon

The Cliffs of Moher, the quiet way

Walk away from the visitor centre along the cliff path. Within a few minutes the crowd thins and you are two people above the Atlantic. That is the photograph.

  3. Evening

    The Oak Room at Adare

Arrive with time to walk to the river before dark. Dinner in The Oak Room, Adare's Michelin-starred restaurant. Book it when you book the room.

For the two of you

Ask Adare about the horse and carriage around the estate for the next morning before you leave. It sounds like too much. It is exactly enough.

What couples get wrong

Arriving at Adare after dark and leaving at ten. If you can, stay a second night here and take one from Sheen Falls. One night is the minimum, not the ideal.

Where you sleep

Adare Manor, County Limerick

One night. Book a Stateroom or a Dunraven Stateroom in the original manor house, not a Classic or Deluxe Room.

Check availability

The manor lit up across the River Maigue at dusk, reflected perfectly in still water.

Day Six · Kerry

Down to Kenmare, where the river meets the bay

A short drive, afternoon tea in Adare if you like, and the arrival that changes the pace of the whole week.

The drive

Adare to Kenmare is about two hours through Killarney.

  1. Morning

    A slow manor morning

Breakfast, the gardens, the carriage if you booked it. Leave around midday. There is no reason to hurry today.

  2. Afternoon

    Arrive at Sheen Falls

The lodge sits where the Sheen River falls into Kenmare Bay. Get to the room, open the window, and let the sound of the water set the tempo for the last two days.

  3. Evening

    Dinner by the falls

The Falls Restaurant, with the cascade lit outside the window. Ask for a table facing the water when you book.

For the two of you

Book a couples' spa treatment at Sheen Falls for this afternoon or tomorrow morning when you book the room.

What couples get wrong

Booking the cheapest room category here. The river and bay are the experience. Ask which side your room faces before you confirm.

Where you sleep

Sheen Falls Lodge, Kenmare

Two nights. A Superior Deluxe Room at least; for the honeymoon, the Bayview Suite or the Oscar Suite.

Check availability

The window open at night and the falls the only sound.

Day Seven · Kerry

The last free day

The Ring of Kerry if you want it, a walk into Kenmare if you do not. Either way, the evening is the ending of the honeymoon.

  1. Morning

Choose: the Ring or the village

A driver makes the Ring of Kerry a pleasure rather than a test. If you would rather not spend the day in a car, walk into Kenmare, one of the prettiest small towns in Ireland, and back along the river.

  2. Afternoon

    Back for the spa

Be back by mid-afternoon. The spa, a book in the library, the terrace. Nothing else.

  3. Evening

    The last dinner

Stay at the lodge. The best last night of a honeymoon is the one with no taxi and no alarm.

A hot stone treatment in the spa at Sheen Falls Lodge

For the two of you

Tell the lodge it is your last night when you book. Let them decide what that means.

What couples get wrong

Driving the Ring yourselves on the last day. It is narrow, busy and exhausting. Take a driver or skip it.

Where you sleep

Sheen Falls Lodge, Kenmare

Second night. On departure day, Kenmare to Shannon Airport is around two and a half hours.

Check availability

The last evening on the terrace, the bay going silver, a week behind you.

The rooms

The room is the honeymoon

At every house on this route, the difference between a lovely stay and the one you describe for years is the room category. This is the one we would book, and the question to ask before you pay.

A window seat in a Merrion bedroom looking onto Georgian Dublin

2 nights

The Merrion

Book: A Main House suite

The Main House is the restored Georgian townhouses: the panelling, the proportions, the windows onto the garden. It is the Merrion we stayed in.

Ask: Which Main House suites have a freestanding bath, and which face the garden.

A Lake View Deluxe Room at Ashford Castle

2 nights

Ashford Castle

Book: A Lake View Deluxe Room, or a suite

The hotel's own room list separates estate views from lake views. For a honeymoon, the lake is not optional.

Ask: A room facing Lough Corrib, confirmed by room number.

Photo: Courtesy of Ashford Castle

A Dunraven Stateroom at Adare Manor

1 night (2 if you can)

Adare Manor

Book: A Stateroom or Dunraven Stateroom

The Staterooms carry the manor's Gothic windows, height and plasterwork. The Classic and Deluxe Rooms are lovely and could be anywhere.

Ask: A Stateroom overlooking the River Maigue or the formal gardens.

Photo: Courtesy of Adare Manor

The Bayview Suite at Sheen Falls Lodge

2 nights

Sheen Falls Lodge

Book: The Bayview Suite or the Oscar Suite

The last two nights are where a suite earns its price: more time in the room, the bay or the falls outside the window.

Ask: Whether your room faces the falls or the bay, and which you would prefer.

Book first

The order to book in

Adare Manor and Sheen Falls rooms

The fewest honeymoon-grade rooms on the route. Book 6 to 9 months ahead for May, June or September.

  2. 2

    Ashford Castle, lake-facing

Book with the room and ask for falconry and the spa at the same time.

  3. 3

    The Merrion and Patrick Guilbaud

Room first, then the dinner for your second night.

  4. 4

Flights: into Dublin, out of Shannon

An open-jaw ticket saves a full day of driving back across the country.

  5. 5

    The driver

One driver for the whole week, collecting you at Dublin Airport and leaving you at Shannon.

When to go

The best months for a honeymoon in Ireland

Our first choice

May and June

Long evenings, gardens at their best, and light until late on the terrace at Sheen Falls.

Our second choice

September

Warm water light, fewer coaches at the Cliffs, and still long enough days.

Beautiful, busier

July and August

Book further ahead and expect company at the Cliffs and on the Ring.

For the fireside

November to March

Short days and firelit rooms. Check seasonal opening before you commit to a route.

Ten nights instead of seven? See the ten-day honeymoon, or keep it to the south with five days in Kerry and Cork. For the full hotel shortlist, read Ireland's most romantic hotels.
