The Southwest Championship Swing: 7 Days
Lahinch, Ballybunion, Adare Manor and Waterville in one week, from three bases: Dromoland Castle, Adare Manor and Waterville. A private driver throughout, so nobody drives on the left after eighteen holes of links wind.
The places we recommend to friends.

If the golf is the point of the trip:
→ Fly into Shannon. Leave from Kerry or Shannon.
→ Four rounds, each on a course with published visitor or resident access.
→ Three bases, two nights each. A driver, never a rental car.

3 stops
The first day earns the next six by doing nothing.

Shannon, Dromoland Castle
Land, meet the driver, sleep in a castle.
Quick Read
What this day is: Arrival day, built to absorb the overnight flight.
Best way to do it: Your driver meets you at Shannon. Dromoland is close to the airport.
What you'll remember: The first walk around the castle lake.
The Day
Morning
Land at Shannon. The driver takes the bags; you take the back seat.
Midday
Check in at Dromoland. Sleep for two hours, no more.
Afternoon
A walk of the grounds, or putting practice to find your Irish pace.
Evening
Dinner in the castle. Early night.
Signature Moment
→ The castle at dusk from across the lake, jet lag fading.
What People Get Wrong
Booking a links tee time on the day you land. You will play the worst round of the week.
The Ireland Edit Take
Give the driver your tee times for the whole week tonight. Every pickup after this is built backwards from them.
Where to Stay
Experiences

Lahinch Old Course
The links that belongs to its village.
Quick Read
What this day is: The first links round, from the Clare base.
Best way to do it: A mid-week morning tee, booked about twelve months out.
What you'll remember: The goats by the clubhouse and the first sight of the Klondyke.
The Day
Morning
Driver to Lahinch. Warm up, meet the caddies.
Midday
The Old Course. Not the Castle unless the group is still walking well afterwards.
Afternoon
Lunch in the village, a walk to the beach.
Evening
Back to Dromoland for dinner.
Signature Moment
→ Walking off the eighteenth into a village that has watched golfers do it for over a century.
What People Get Wrong
Booking the Castle Course by mistake. Both sheets show side by side; read which one you clicked.
The Ireland Edit Take
The 2026 green fee is €450. At least one caddie per group is required; the club reserves one for each golfer unless you say otherwise in writing.
Experiences
What We'd Book First
Four tee sheets decide this trip. Book them in order.
- 1.Ballybunion, about twelve months out. Mid-May to mid-June mornings go first.
- 2.Lahinch, about twelve months out. Tuesday to Thursday mornings in June or September.
- 3.Adare Manor, room and round together. Direct with the estate, any day but Monday.
- 4.Waterville, last. Full payment, non-refundable.
Pack once. The driver carries the bags while you play.

Ballybunion, then Adare
The pilgrimage round, then the Manor.
Quick Read
What this day is: The round most Americans come to Ireland for, then the move to Adare.
Best way to do it: A morning tee off the white tees, with caddies.
What you'll remember: The dunes along the Atlantic on the Old Course.
The Day
Morning
Early start from Dromoland to Ballybunion.
Midday
The Old Course. The Cashen only as a bonus.
Afternoon
Driver east to Adare Manor. Sleep in the car.
Evening
A quiet first dinner at the Manor.
Signature Moment
→ The Old Course in the morning wind, exactly as the stories promised.
What People Get Wrong
Treating the Cashen as a lighter version of the Old. It is a harder walk into stronger wind.
The Ireland Edit Take
We do not quote a Ballybunion fee: the club site was unreachable at our last check. Confirm green fee, caddie fee and terms in writing before the deposit.
Where to Stay
Experiences

Adare Manor
The Ryder Cup course, as a resident guest.
Quick Read
What this day is: The parkland contrast to three days of links.
Best way to do it: Any day but Monday, when the course is closed except on bank holidays.
What you'll remember: The eighteenth, finishing below the house.
The Day
Morning
Range, then putting green. Ask your caddie how the greens are running today.
Midday
The round. Choose tees from which you reach par fours with a mid-iron.
Afternoon
The spa, or the estate on foot.
Evening
The trip's long dinner, at the Manor.
Signature Moment
→ The closing stretch with water, green and the Manor in one frame.
What People Get Wrong
Playing it like a links. Fourteen greens are elevated; it rewards the right angle, not the long drive.
The Ireland Edit Take
2026 resident rate €550, mandatory caddie €120, no double bags. A 2027 rate is not published, and September 2027 is closed to hotel guests.
Experiences
The swing turns south, to the end of the Iveragh Peninsula.

Into South Kerry
A day off the course, on the long road west.
Quick Read
What this day is: The rest day, spent arriving rather than playing.
Best way to do it: A late breakfast, then the driver. Stop when the coast tells you to.
What you'll remember: The first view of Ballinskelligs Bay.
The Day
Morning
Late breakfast at Adare. The estate one last time.
Midday
On the road into Kerry with the driver.
Afternoon
Arrive in Waterville. Walk the village front.
Evening
Dinner in the village. Early night before the last round.
Signature Moment
→ The Atlantic opening up at the end of the road.
What People Get Wrong
Driving this yourself after four rounds. This is the day the driver earns the fee.
The Ireland Edit Take
Waterville is two hours of narrow road from Killarney and on the way to nothing. That is why you sleep there.
Where to Stay
Experiences

Waterville Golf Links
The last round, at the far end of Ireland.
Quick Read
What this day is: The finale, on the links most Americans have to be persuaded to book.
Best way to do it: A Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday morning keeps the 2026 fee at €400.
What you'll remember: The estuary wind on the back nine.
The Day
Morning
Waterville with a caddie.
Midday
Lunch at the clubhouse.
Afternoon
Derrynane or Valentia, or nothing at all.
Evening
The last dinner of the trip.
Signature Moment
→ Holing out on the last with nowhere else to be.
What People Get Wrong
Assuming caddies are guaranteed. Waterville will request them but cannot promise them.
The Ireland Edit Take
Waterville takes the full fee at booking and does not refund it. Book this round last, once every other piece holds. Phone +353 66 947 4102 and allow 24 hours to confirm.
Experiences

Home by road, or by air
Kerry Airport, Shannon, or a helicopter.
Quick Read
What this day is: Departure, with one decision to make in advance.
Best way to do it: The driver to Kerry or Shannon. Or charter a helicopter; ask the desk.
What you'll remember: Looking back at the coast you just played.
The Day
Morning
Breakfast in Waterville.
Midday
Driver to the airport.
Afternoon
Flight home.
Evening
Home.
Signature Moment
→ The last view of the Kerry coast.
What People Get Wrong
Booking a midday flight out of Shannon from Waterville by road. Leave the morning free.
The Ireland Edit Take
One charter operator estimates about 40 minutes by helicopter from Shannon to Waterville. That is its estimate, and charter prices are not published.
Experiences
Experiences
Why three bases, not six.
Every move costs a round's worth of energy. Two nights each keeps the golf central.
- Dromoland holds Clare. Close to Shannon, and the base for Lahinch.
- Adare holds the middle. Ballybunion on the way in, its own course the next day.
- Waterville holds the end. You sleep where you play.
