There is a stretch of coastline south of Belfast where the Mourne Mountains fall into the Irish Sea and the dunes rise up to meet them. Somewhere in that collision sits Royal County Down. We think it is the most beautiful piece of ground in world golf, and the first tee is the most intimidating.

What visitors usually ask about Royal County Down
- How far in advance should we book a tee time at Royal County Down?
- For the Championship Links in high season (May to September), book nine to twelve months out. Visitor times are limited to specific windows and the club releases them slowly. If you are staying at Slieve Donard next door, ask the concierge to submit the request the day the calendar opens.
- What is the dress code at Royal County Down?
- Tailored trousers or knee-length shorts with calf socks, a collared shirt, and soft spikes. No denim, no cargo shorts, no athletic wear. The clubhouse asks for a jacket at dinner. Waterproofs are not a costume choice here, they are equipment.
- When is the best time of year to play Royal County Down?
- Mid-May through late September is the honest window. June has the longest evenings and the firmest fairways. September gives you the light photographers chase and shoulder-season pricing at Slieve Donard. Avoid February and March unless you enjoy playing in horizontal rain against the Mournes.
- Do we need a caddie, and how much should we tip?
- A caddie at Royal County Down is not optional if you have never played it. The blind tee shots, the gorse, and the greens all read differently than they look. Caddies at the top Irish clubs are professionals and the tip is the largest line item of the round. Budget €70 to €100 per bag on top of the caddie fee, more if you have played well or been walked around a big course in bad weather. Cash, in euro (or sterling in Northern Ireland), handed over at the eighteenth.
- Is Royal County Down walkable, or do they allow buggies?
- It is a walking course. Buggies are permitted only with a medical certificate and are restricted to cart paths that do not exist on much of the property. If your group cannot walk eighteen holes with a caddie, plan Ardglass or Kilkeel as the second round of the trip instead.
