How Booking Works, And Which Days

Visitors book Royal County Down by completing the booking enquiry form on the club's own website. You give a name, email, address, phone number, a preferred date, the number of golfers, and how many caddies, electric trolleys and hire clubs you need. A member of the Reservations Team then checks what remains and comes back to you. That is the whole mechanism. There is no ballot, whatever older guides and a fair amount of forum lore still say, and there is no booking button that confirms a time on the spot.

The club is candid that tee time availability is exceptionally limited, and it already invites golfers to register interest for 2028. Read that as a signal about timing rather than a reason to give up. The sensible move is to send the enquiry as soon as your travel dates are real, with more than one acceptable date, and to hold everything else on the trip loosely until the round is confirmed. The rest of Northern Ireland will fit around Newcastle. Newcastle will not fit around it.

Visitor play on the Championship Links is available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The Annesley Links is available to visitors on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Wednesday and Saturday are not visitor days on either course.

This matters more than it sounds. If you are building a week in the North, put Royal County Down on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday first and let Portrush, the Mournes or a rest day fill the gaps. The most common planning mistake we see is a group flying in on a Friday, driving south on Saturday, and discovering the one day they allowed for Newcastle is a day the club does not take visitors.

The 2027 Green Fees

The club publishes two courses and two seasons. On the Championship Links, the visitor season for 2026 runs from 20 April to 16 October at £450, and for 2027 from 19 April to 15 October at £495. On the Annesley Links, the same windows are priced at £120 in 2026 and £150 in 2027.

Those figures are per player, in pounds sterling, for eighteen holes. The club does not publish a shoulder rate, a twilight rate or a group discount on the enquiry page, so we would plan on the headline number. For a four-ball on the Championship Links in 2027 that is £1,980 in green fees before a caddie, a trolley or lunch in the Murlough Room.

Four-Balls, Caddies, And No Buggies

All play on both courses is in four-ball groups. If you book fewer than four players, the club may combine you with other golfers to make a full group of up to four. Couples and threesomes should expect to meet someone new on the first tee, and we would treat that as part of the day rather than an intrusion.

Every group must have at least one caddie. If you do not pre-book one, the club arranges a minimum of one forecaddie for the group. The club publishes a single caddie at £75 and a forecaddie at £110 per group, both paid to the caddie directly in cash at the end of the round, with any gratuity at your discretion. There is no ATM at the club, so draw sterling in Newcastle before you arrive. Our view is simple: a first visit here without your own caddie wastes the most expensive part of the day, because the course hides its lines.

The club states plainly that buggies cannot be accommodated on site. Some older guides describe a medical-certificate exception. The club's current terms do not, and we would not plan a trip on the assumption that one exists.

Electric trolleys are available at £40 and hire clubs at £70. If anyone in your group cannot walk eighteen holes over dunes, the honest answer is to book them the Annesley or a Mournes day rather than the Championship Links. That is a harder conversation to have in March than in the car park in June, so have it early.

Payment, Cancellation And The Small Print

Full payment is required at the time of booking. The club accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit and debit cards, and every transaction is in pounds sterling. Bookings are non-transferable and non-refundable. If the club cancels play because of weather, the prepaid amount is refunded in full on request. Rounds are not held as credit under any circumstances.

Two practical consequences for Americans. First, use a card without a foreign transaction fee, because the charge is in sterling and it is large. Second, buy travel insurance that covers prepaid golf, because a missed connection is not a weather cancellation and the club will not move the round. Keep the club's confirmation email with the trip documents, since that is your only record of what was agreed.

On The Day

The club asks every player to meet the Starter on the first tee at least ten minutes before the starting time. Before that, the Golf Operations Team checks you in and takes the bags, there is a staffed practice area with transport to and from it, and your caddie is introduced after the warm-up. The dress code is traditional: collared shirts, tailored trousers, shorts, skirts or skorts, and soft-spiked shoes strongly advised. Blue denim, collarless t-shirts, cargo shorts, tracksuits, leggings, flip-flops and slides are not permitted, and hats come off indoors. At the turn, a vintage Citroen van by the 10th tee sells sandwiches, local beer and the club's RCD Transfusion. Afterwards, the Murlough Room is the visitor dining room, and the club itself recommends the seafood chowder. So do we.

The Things That Catch Americans Out

Currency is the first. Newcastle is in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, so the green fee, the caddie, the trolley and the lunch are all in pounds sterling, not euro. If your trip starts in Dublin, you will cross a border you will barely notice and your euro will be no use at the caddie shed. Draw sterling before you arrive, because the club has no ATM.

The second is the group. A pair who book alone will usually be combined into a four-ball, and the round is paced for four. The third is the absence of a buggy, which rules out some parties entirely. The fourth is the refund policy: the club refunds weather cancellations it makes, not missed flights, late arrivals or changed minds. And the fifth is the season itself. Outside the published visitor windows, the enquiry page does not quote a fee, so a March or November trip should not assume a Championship round is possible at all. Is It Worth £495

On the course alone, yes. Royal County Down is the links course golf writers return to most often and one of the handful of courses anywhere that justify a trip on their own. The blind drives, the bearded bunkers and the Mournes behind the ninth green are not replicated anywhere else, and the club's own hole-by-hole guide is right that the 9th is one of the most photographed holes in world golf.

Where we are more cautious is the total bill. With green fee, caddie, cash gratuity, a trolley and lunch, a single player can pass £650 before the hotel. That is still less than some American resort courses charge, and you are playing a course with a record set by Jimmy Bruen in 1939. But it is a number to decide on before you write to the club, not after the confirmation arrives.

What To Book First, And What To Book Around It

Send the enquiry first, with two or three visitor-day dates. Once the round is confirmed and paid, book the rooms: Slieve Donard sits at the end of Golf Links Road and is the obvious base, and our three-day chapter covers how to use the Mournes and the second round around it. Only then book flights, ideally into Belfast or Dublin with the drive planned for the day before, never the morning of the round.

If the Championship Links cannot take you on your dates, do not abandon Newcastle. The Annesley is a genuine short links at £150, the Mournes are on the doorstep, and Royal Portrush is on the same side of the border, up on the Antrim coast. Newcastle sits on Dundrum Bay at the foot of the Mournes, south of Belfast. Most Americans arrive through Dublin or Belfast and drive. Plan to be in Newcastle the night before the round, because the ten-minute rule at the first tee is real and a morning drive from either city leaves too little margin for traffic, a wrong turn or a late rental car.

If nobody in the group wants to drive on the left after a long flight, a private driver is the sensible upgrade and pays for itself in the day you do not lose. The club is at 36 Golf Links Road, a short walk from Slieve Donard, which is another reason the hotel is the obvious base for this round.
