What is the best golf course in Ireland?

Royal County Down in Newcastle, Co. Down. The front nine through the dunes under the Mountains of Mourne is the most demanding and most beautiful stretch of links golf in the country. Ballybunion Old is the closest challenger, and on a windy afternoon it is arguably the better test.

How much does it cost to play Ireland's best golf courses?

Peak-season green fees run from about €150 at Carne to €550 at Adare Manor. Royal County Down is £450, Royal Portrush £420, and Lahinch, Ballybunion, Tralee and Old Head all sit around €450. Shoulder-season and twilight rates are meaningfully lower, often 30 to 40 percent below peak.

How far in advance should I book tee times in Ireland?

Twelve months for Royal County Down, Royal Portrush and Adare Manor in peak months. Six to nine months is usually enough for Lahinch, Ballybunion, Portmarnock, Waterville and Tralee. Carne can often be booked inside a month, even in summer.

Do you need a handicap certificate to play these courses?

Several of the championship clubs ask for one. Royal County Down and Portmarnock apply handicap limits for visitors, and Royal Portrush asks for proof of club membership or a handicap index. Carry a printed or digital handicap record and email the club before you travel.

Can you play all ten of these courses in one trip?

You can, but we would not. Ten rounds across both coasts means long transfers and no rest days. A better trip is five or six rounds over seven to ten nights, split between the north and the southwest, with at least one day that has no golf in it.

Our ranking of the best golf courses in Ireland puts Royal County Down first, then Royal Portrush, Lahinch, Ballybunion, Portmarnock, Waterville, Tralee, Adare Manor, Old Head, Doonbeg and Carne. The order reflects the round rather than the reputation: how the holes hold up in wind, what the club is like to deal with, and whether the day around the golf justifies the drive.

Eleven courses, each with its current peak green fee and the stay we recommend beside it.
Royal County Down and Royal Portrush are the two rounds we would protect first in any itinerary.
Carne is the value round of the list at roughly €150 to €195 in peak season.
Nine of the eleven are links. Adare Manor is the parkland exception, and worth it.

For American golfers

Plan on 400 to 450 euro or pound per round at the marquee links in peak season, which is roughly 440 to 570 dollars, and book visitor tee times nine to twelve months ahead. Nothing here is more than a four hour drive from Dublin or Shannon, and the two are only about 130 miles apart, so one week covers four or five of these courses without a rushed morning.
