Ballybunion: How To Play, Stay And Eat
Tom Watson's favourite, the cliffside back nine, and the town that has not sold its soul.

Ballybunion is the course that changed how the world thought about Irish golf. Tom Watson called it one of the finest links in the world. The back nine along the Atlantic cliffs is the piece of ground most visiting Americans have on their list, and it lives up to every word written about it.
But Ballybunion the town has resisted becoming a resort. It remains a real Kerry village. Small hotels, one great fish shop, a beach that the townspeople actually use. We prefer it this way.

Cliff meadows, a market town lunch, and a hot seaweed bath on the strand.
The Old Course takes four and a half hours, more into wind, and most groups add the Cashen afterwards. Assume a long day if they do.

A clifftop meadow path above sea caves and nesting birds, opened and maintained by the family who farm it. There is no coach park and there never will be.

A market town that produced more writers than towns ten times its size. Kerry lamb and market fish at lunch, then John B. Keane's own pub snug for twenty minutes afterwards.

A seaweed bath on the Ladies' Beach
In Ballybunion village, walkable
Hot seawater and hand-cut seaweed in a private tub above the strand, run on this beach for well over a century. Go late so you finish as the golfers come off eighteen.
If it rains
Listowel absorbs a wet day well: the writers' museum, the castle, and a long lunch. Keep the seaweed bath, which is better in rain.
What to bring
A swimsuit, and shoes for wet farm grass on the cliff path.

Driving to Dingle and back on a round day. It is beautiful and it is four hours of car.

What visitors usually ask about Ballybunion
- Is Ballybunion Old Course as good as its reputation?
- Tom Watson called it one of the finest in the world and he was not being polite. The cliff holes on the back nine (7, 11, and the walk up 17) are the postcard, but the routing through the dunes is the round. Play it early in the trip, not last. Everything after feels quieter.
- How far in advance should we book Ballybunion?
- Six to nine months for summer. The Old Course has visitor times most days but the mornings go first. The Cashen Course next door is Robert Trent Jones Sr. and worth a second round rather than a warm-up.
- When is the best season for Ballybunion?
- May through September. North Kerry gets less rain than West Clare, but the wind off the Shannon Estuary is a constant. Late spring is the most reliable weather; September gives you empty fairways and open dining rooms in Ballybunion town.
- What is the dress code and tipping expectation at Ballybunion?
- Collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts, soft spikes. No denim in the clubhouse. Caddies at the top Irish clubs are professionals and the tip is the largest line item of the round. Budget €70 to €100 per bag on top of the caddie fee, more if you have played well or been walked around a big course in bad weather. Cash, in euro (or sterling in Northern Ireland), handed over at the eighteenth.
- Is Ballybunion town worth staying in, or should we drive from Killarney?
- Stay in Ballybunion or nearby Listowel for the golf trip. The drive from Killarney is ninety minutes each way and you will do it twice a day if you commute. This is a Kerry town that has not sold its soul, and a pint at Kirby's after the round is part of the story.
The Booking Decision
How we would book Ballybunion.
Open the Ballybunion visitor booking page nine to twelve months out, target a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning on the Old Course in May, June, or September, and hold your accommodation at Adare Manor or in Listowel before the euro deposit clears. Book off the white tees with caddies, treat the Cashen as an optional add rather than a substitute, and use a specialist agent only inside a four-month window or for groups of eight and up.
Checked 27 September 2026. The Ballybunion Golf Club website was unreachable to us at that check, so no green fee or caddie figure is quoted here. Confirm current rates with the club directly.
Play it if
- The cliffside run from the seventh to the eleventh is the round you came for.
- You can flight a ball low and keep your nerve in wind with no shelter.
- You are giving Kerry two nights around it rather than driving in and out.
Skip it if
- Anyone is unsteady on uneven ground. The terrain is rough in places.
- A poor forecast would ruin the trip. There is nowhere to hide here.
- You need a quoted green fee before you commit. We have not been able to verify one.
Time it takes
A walking round of about four and a half hours on exposed ground, so treat it as the whole of one day in Kerry.
What we would book today
- Open the Ballybunion visitor booking page nine to twelve months out.
- Target a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning on the Old Course in May, June, or September.
- Hold a room at Adare Manor or in Listowel before the deposit clears.
- Use a credit card without a foreign-transaction fee. The deposit clears in euro.
- Book off the white tees and add caddies at the point of booking.
What we would not bother with
- Do not book the Cashen instead of the Old Course. It is a second round, not a substitute.
- Do not sleep in Ballybunion town for three nights. Sleep in Adare or Listowel.
- Do not select the championship tees on the Old Course. The whites are the honest round.
- Do not play the round as a day trip out of Killarney. Give Kerry two nights around it.
- Do not pay a specialist agent for a booking a nine-month lead time will make for free.
