Ballybunion is the course that changed how the world thought about Irish golf. Tom Watson called it one of the finest links in the world. The back nine along the Atlantic cliffs is the piece of ground most visiting Americans have on their list, and it lives up to every word written about it.
But Ballybunion the town has resisted becoming a resort. It remains a real Kerry village. Small hotels, one great fish shop, a beach that the townspeople actually use. We prefer it this way.

What visitors usually ask about Ballybunion
- Is Ballybunion Old Course as good as its reputation?
- Tom Watson called it one of the finest in the world and he was not being polite. The cliff holes on the back nine (7, 11, and the walk up 17) are the postcard, but the routing through the dunes is the round. Play it early in the trip, not last. Everything after feels quieter.
- How far in advance should we book Ballybunion?
- Six to nine months for summer. The Old Course has visitor times most days but the mornings go first. The Cashen Course next door is Robert Trent Jones Sr. and worth a second round rather than a warm-up.
- When is the best season for Ballybunion?
- May through September. North Kerry gets less rain than West Clare, but the wind off the Shannon Estuary is a constant. Late spring is the most reliable weather; September gives you empty fairways and open dining rooms in Ballybunion town.
- What is the dress code and tipping expectation at Ballybunion?
- Collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts, soft spikes. No denim in the clubhouse. Caddies at the top Irish clubs are professionals and the tip is the largest line item of the round. Budget €70 to €100 per bag on top of the caddie fee, more if you have played well or been walked around a big course in bad weather. Cash, in euro (or sterling in Northern Ireland), handed over at the eighteenth.
- Is Ballybunion town worth staying in, or should we drive from Killarney?
- Stay in Ballybunion or nearby Listowel for the golf trip. The drive from Killarney is ninety minutes each way and you will do it twice a day if you commute. This is a Kerry town that has not sold its soul, and a pint at Kirby's after the round is part of the story.
