Travelling with small children in Ireland is easier than most American parents expect and harder than most Irish itineraries admit. The country is genuinely welcoming to children. The distances, on the other hand, do not care how old anyone is.
This edition is built around ninety-minute drive days, hotels with grass, and one castle rather than four. It assumes a nap, a wet afternoon and at least one dinner that ends early.
It also assumes you would still like the trip to be beautiful. Nothing here is a compromise, it is simply paced for the people actually travelling.

Ninety minutes is the ceiling. Beyond that everyone in the car is having a worse trip, and Ireland's roads are slower than the map promises.
Four bases in seven days, all south and east of the Shannon, so no leg is long.

Do not drive far on arrival day. Wicklow gives you gardens, a waterfall, short walks and a bed within an hour of the terminal.

One castle is enough for a week. Kilkenny is the right one because the city around it is compact, flat and full of places to stop when someone needs to stop.

p. 8Sand, warm water by Irish standards, and nothing to organise.
Inchydoney and Barleycove are the two beaches that make an Irish family week work. Bring wetsuits. The water is colder than it looks and children do not care.

End in one place. Kenmare has a real high street, a park walk from most of the hotels and enough weather-proof options that a wet day is not a lost one.

p. 10Where it works, where it will not, and the timing that fixes both.
Irish hotels do an early children's supper and it is the single most useful institution in the country. Use it, then eat properly at eight.
Pub food at five thirty is entirely normal here and nobody will look at you.
