An expat note from Deborah

Sheen Falls is one of the few Irish hotels we recommend without ever needing to caveat. The Old Kenmare Road, walked from its grounds, is part of the reason.

It is not a famous walk. It is a beautiful, slightly forgotten walk, which is the most reliable kind of Irish walk.

We come back for a long lunch in the bar. The day arranges itself.

How we'd actually walk it

The rhythm of the day.

  • 01Out from the hotel grounds at nine.
  • 02Walk to the Esknamucky stream, or further if it pleases.
  • 03Back for lunch, a fire, an afternoon of nothing.

The hotel pairing

Sheen Falls Lodge

The walk begins at the gate. So does the rest of the day.

Walk slowly. Bring a coat. Choose the hotel for the country at its door.
