The Burren flora in May

Ireland's strangest landscape, the week the gentians come out.

We have found May to be the precise moment to experience The Burren in its particular glory. This limestone landscape, where Arctic, Mediterranean, and Alpine flora coexist, comes alive when the spring gentians emerge, painting the stark terrain with unexpected blues. It is a very specific, and fleeting, window.

Slieve League

Our ritual involves a quick drive north from Ballyvaughan. From there, it is a short stroll into one of the coastal fields. We take a moment to look down and observe the delicate, improbable blooms at our feet.

This brief half-hour among the gentians is an undervalued experience for us in May.
