Every other edition in this archive is a working document. This one is not. It is the thinking underneath all of them, gathered in one place for the first time.
Thirteen essays, written over several years and sequenced deliberately rather than chronologically. They are about culture, about hospitality, about land and weather, and about the specific experience of being American in a country that half your family may have come from.
The canon began at twelve and stands at thirteen. It grows slowly and only when an idea earns its place against the ones already here. Nothing in it is a destination guide, and nothing in it will help you book a hotel faster.
What it will do is change what you notice when you arrive. That is the whole ambition of the book.
