Midleton Distillery

The serious one. Redbreast, the Spot range, Powers and Midleton Very Rare are all made here, and the tasting-led experiences are the reason to come.

Our position

If you only tour one distillery in Ireland, tour this one, and book a tasting-led experience rather than the standard walk.

Midleton holds two distilleries on one site: the original, with its enormous pot still and water wheel, and the working modern plant next door that produces most of the pot still whiskey Ireland is known for. The standard tour is well run and perfectly good. It is not why we send people here.

The reason to come is the tasting-led experience, where you sit with pot still whiskeys at cask strength and a distiller who can explain why they differ. That is where the category finally makes sense: the unmalted barley, the oily texture, the green pepper bite at the back of the glass. An hour of that is worth more than three distillery walks.

Practically, it is an easy morning out of Cork city and a natural stop if you are driving the south coast between Kinsale and Waterford. Book several weeks ahead between June and September. The tasting rooms are small and they sell out first.

Questions we get

Is the Midleton distillery tour worth it?
Yes, if you book a tasting-led experience. The standard tour is a good walk through a beautiful site, but the cask-strength pot still tasting is what makes the category make sense, and it is the part Americans cannot easily replicate at home.
How far is Midleton from Cork?
Twenty five minutes east of Cork city on the N25, which makes it an easy morning if you are staying in Cork, or a natural stop while driving the south coast.
