On slow Ireland
The version of Ireland worth experiencing is rarely the one on the front of the brochure. It is the second pot of tea, the room with the window left open, the headland walked an hour before dinner. The trip people remember years later is almost always the one they almost didn't take.
On the rooms worth staying inside for
A good Irish hotel earns its rate before breakfast. Pay attention to the bar at six o'clock, the light in the drawing room, the tone of the woman at the front desk. The rest is wallpaper.
On roads taken slowly
Slea Head, just after rain. The road to Mizen on a clear afternoon. The Coastal Route from Carrick to Ballintoy in early summer light. None of these roads reward speed. Drive them as if you have nowhere to be.
