A note from Deborah. Read her editorial perspective
Kenmare is the rare Irish town with two hotels of the same rank, a short walk apart, and readers ask us every week which one to book. In the 2026 Michelin Guide both kept Two Keys, two of only five hotels in Ireland at that level. So the question is not quality. It is temperament. Park Hotel Kenmare is the town house: a Victorian hotel at the top of the street, gardens running down to the bay, dinner in town a five minute walk away. Sheen Falls Lodge is the estate: a long drive over the river into 300 acres of woodland, the falls under your window, and no reason to leave. Choose the one that matches how you want your evenings to end.
The Short Answer
Book Park Hotel Kenmare if Kenmare is a base you will leave every morning, for the Ring of Kerry, the Beara or a round of golf, and you want to stroll into town for dinner. Book Sheen Falls Lodge if the hotel is the point: a long lunch, a walk along the river, a fire in the evening and the sense that the outside world has closed its gates.
For a first trip with three nights in Kerry, we lean towards the Park for its ease. For a honeymoon, an anniversary or a second trip, we lean towards Sheen Falls. Both are right. Neither is a compromise.
Setting: Town House or Private Estate
The Park sits where the town meets the water. You walk out of the front door and you are on Kenmare's streets, among its restaurants, galleries and pubs. The gardens behind slope towards the bay, so mornings feel rural even though the town is right there.
Sheen Falls Lodge is across the river, set in a 300 acre estate overlooking the falls and Kenmare Bay. It is close to town, a few minutes by car, but it feels much further. This is a hotel that rewards staying put. Michelin's inspectors described the setting as enchanting, and we would not argue.
Dining
Sheen Falls has the stronger kitchen right now. The Falls Restaurant, led by executive head chef Mark Treacy, was added to the Michelin Guide in July 2026. That is a recommendation, not a star, but the cooking is very good, and it matters when you are not planning to leave the estate.
At the Park, the town is your dining room. Kenmare has more good tables per street than almost anywhere in Kerry. A guest at the Park can try a different one each night, and walk home.
For Golfers
Kenmare is a sensible golf base for the southern half of Kerry. Kenmare Golf Club is in town and the Ring of Kerry Golf Club is a short drive west. Waterville takes about an hour over the mountain road, with a driver doing the work. Ballybunion and Tralee are further, and suit a Killarney base better.
Either hotel works for a golf week. Golfers who want to walk out after an early round lean towards the Park. Golfers travelling with a partner who does not play lean towards Sheen Falls, where the non-golfer has the estate, the spa and the river to themselves.
Season and Timing for 2027
Sheen Falls Lodge closes for a winter period each January. If your trip falls in January or early February, confirm dates with the hotel before you build the week around it. Park Hotel Kenmare keeps its own winter season, so check that too.
For golf and walking, aim for May, June or September. July and August are busy on the Ring of Kerry, and Kenmare's tables book out. Both hotels publish seasonal offers, so we never quote a fixed rate. The Desk checks live availability for your dates.
Our Verdict
If you can only give Kenmare two nights, stay at the Park and use the town. If you can give it three or more, and you want the hotel to be part of the memory rather than a place to sleep, stay at Sheen Falls. Some of our readers split the stay: two nights at the Park while they drive and play, then a final night at Sheen Falls to slow down before the drive to Shannon.
