A note from Deborah. Read her editorial perspective
Most of our weeks end near Shannon, and the last two nights usually belong to one of two houses: Adare Manor in County Limerick or Dromoland Castle in County Clare. Readers ask which is better. In 2027 the more useful question is which one is open, and available, for your dates. Dromoland closes for its seasonal window from November 2026 to the end of May 2027. Adare Manor hosts the Ryder Cup in September 2027 and takes no normal hotel bookings that month. Between those two facts sits the whole decision.
The Short Answer
Travelling before June 2027: book Adare Manor. Dromoland is closed, so there is nothing to weigh.
Travelling in September 2027: book Dromoland Castle. Adare Manor is reserved for Ryder Cup week and the event around it, and normal rooms are not on sale.
Travelling June, July, August or October: you have a genuine choice, and it comes down to temperament. Adare is the polished grand estate, built for a long stay and a serious round. Dromoland is the castle with the lake, warmer and less formal, and a gentler finale before the flight home.
Setting: Manor Estate or Lakeside Castle
Adare Manor sits in parkland beside the village of Adare, a long Gothic Revival house on the River Maigue with the championship course laid out around it. The feeling is of an estate run with total precision.
Dromoland is a castle on its own lake, a short drive from Shannon Airport. It is the easier last night of a trip: you can be at check-in an hour after leaving the Burren and at the airport within the half hour on the morning you fly.
For Golfers
Adare Manor's course is the Ryder Cup venue, and play is reserved largely for hotel guests. If the round is the point of the trip, stay at the Manor outside September and ask the Desk to request the tee time with the room.
Dromoland has its own parkland course on the estate, a relaxed round rather than a pilgrimage. From either house, Lahinch and Doonbeg are within reach for a links day, with a driver.
Season and Timing for 2027
Dromoland: closed November 2026 to 31 May 2027, then open for summer and autumn. Our itineraries switch those nights to Adare Manor automatically during the closure.
Adare Manor: Ryder Cup week is 13 to 19 September 2027, with matches 17 to 19 September. The Manor is unavailable for normal hotel bookings for all of September. Spectator plans run through Ryder Cup Europe, not the hotel.
June and early October are the sweet spots: both houses open, long evenings or gold light, and golf in good condition.
Our Verdict
For a golf trip with one round that matters, Adare Manor. For a first trip that ends with a flight from Shannon, Dromoland. For spring 2027, Adare by default. For September 2027, Dromoland by default. We confirm availability at both before recommending one, and quote no rates until the house has quoted us.
