Mayo in one minute

Mayo is bigger than Delaware and holds fewer than 140,000 people. The landscape is not curated for you. There is no visitor centre at the good bits of the Atlantic Drive. You drive, you pull in, and the thing is simply there.

That is the trade. Mayo gives you scale and silence, and asks in return that you plan your own day and accept that the pub kitchen closes at nine.

Mayo is the quiet west: Keem Bay on Achill Island, Croagh Patrick over Clew Bay, and Westport, the prettiest planned town in Ireland. Base two nights in Westport, climb the Reek on a clear morning, and drive Achill's Atlantic Drive by evening light. Ashford Castle sits on the county's southern edge if you want the grand finish. Mayo asks for time and pays it back in silence.

The three Mayos: sociable Clew Bay, severe Achill, and the green and ancient south and north. Each stop has a best hour and a better alternative for when the day goes wrong.

    Westport

    Clew Bay

    A planned Georgian town, a river path, dinner options

    The sociable Mayo. A planned Georgian town on Clew Bay, the bay holding a reputed 365 drumlin islands, with the best restaurant choice in the county and a direct train from Dublin.

    Expat perspective

    This is the base for a first night in Mayo. You can walk to dinner, which matters more than people expect after a day on single-track roads.

    If Westport is full on a summer weekend, base on Achill and treat Westport as a lunch stop on the way through.

    Croagh Patrick

    Murrisk, above Clew Bay

    The holy mountain, seen rather than climbed

    The mountain that stands over Clew Bay. The ascent is two to three hours on loose scree, and it has sent more than a few visitors down on a mountain rescue stretcher.

    Expat perspective

    Most of our American guests should not climb it. The view of Clew Bay from the car park at Murrisk gives you most of the feeling and none of the ankle risk.

    Achill and Keem Bay

    Over the Michael Davitt Bridge

    The severe Mayo: cliffs, a horseshoe of sand, almost no one

    An island you drive straight onto at Achill Sound. Keem Bay, the Atlantic Drive, the deserted village at Slievemore and the cliffs at Croaghaun, among the highest in Europe.

    Expat perspective

    Allow forty minutes from the bridge to Keem. The last stretch is single track with passing places and a drop on one side. Not the road for your first hour of left-hand driving.

    Keem runs a car park capacity system on hot weekends. If it is full, walk Slievemore's deserted village and come back to the beach late in the day.

    Cong and Ashford

    Lough Corrib, on the Galway border

    The green Mayo: woods, a lake, a castle estate

    The village and woods around Ashford Castle, where the estate runs a falconry school, Lough Corrib cruises from the castle pier and the enquiry-led Meet the Makers craft days.

    Expat perspective

    Come up from Galway through Cong rather than cutting across the midlands. It is twenty minutes longer and about an hour better.

    If the castle is beyond the budget, The Lodge at Ashford sits on the same estate at roughly half the rate, with access to the grounds.

    Killary and Delphi

    The southern edge of the county

    A fjord, a valley, no phone signal

    Killary Fjord sits on the Galway and Mayo border, with Mayo rising above its northern shore and the Delphi Valley running north toward Louisburgh below the Mweelrea range.

    Expat perspective

    The water is best understood by boat or from the old road along its southern shore. Give it time, then let Delphi Lodge's long dinner table finish the day.

    North Mayo and Erris

    Ballina, Ceide Fields, Downpatrick Head, Belmullet

    The ancient Mayo, and the emptiest coast in the west

    An entirely different coast. At Ceide Fields a neolithic farmed landscape sits preserved under the bog; further west, the Mullet peninsula runs out into the Atlantic beyond Belmullet.

    Fuel up in Westport or Castlebar before you go out to Achill or Belmullet. The Mullet has long, beautiful stretches with nothing open on a Sunday.

    Three nights only? Leave the north for the next trip. Splitting four bases means you spend the trip in the car.

Mayo is the county that rewards the traveller who stays put. Westport is the base, Croagh Patrick and Achill are the days, and Ashford Castle is the estate decision at the southern edge. The room ladder in Westport is unusually long, which is good news if you read it properly.

Ashford Castle

Ask for: A Stateroom in the oldest part of the castle, with a Lough Corrib outlook

The Staterooms occupy the original castle and publish lake views. The estate also publishes Meet the Makers, private Hawk Walks and a year-round Lough Corrib cruise from the pier.

Do not accept a generic 'castle room'. Eighty-three rooms are individually designed, and category, building and outlook are three separate decisions.

The table, and when it actually opens

The Fern Grill, Knockranny

The hotel's restaurant, alongside the Brehon Bar, a published afternoon tea, Knockranny's Garden, a garden terrace and Spa Salveo using Germaine de Capuccini.

Current restaurant hours are not published on the homepage. Telephone (0)98 28600.

Book the spa for the afternoon after Croagh Patrick, not the morning before it. The legs need the heat afterwards.

Ashford Castle, George V Dining Room

Breakfast is served in the George V Dining Room, with published hours of 7:30am to 10:45am from mid-March through October and 8am to 10:45am from November to mid-March. Dinner runs daily 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

Reserve dinner and any estate experience before arrival.

The hotel publishes signature beef carved tableside and the daily Irish catch.

Ground truths

  • Croagh Patrick is a scree climb, not a walk. Boots, poles and a weather check, or do not start.
  • Achill is a full day from Westport once you allow for Keem Bay and the Atlantic Drive.
  • Ashford Castle is not on the Kerry route. It belongs to a Mayo and Galway trip.
  • Knockranny publishes a helipad, which tells you something useful about how the property is used.
  • Westport town is walkable from Knockranny but it is uphill on the way back.

Being honest about it

Mayo is the quietest of the big western counties and that is the point. If you need a restaurant scene, Mayo will disappoint you and Galway is ninety minutes away.
