5 Slow Days in Connemara

Five days at the speed of the bog road. Three nights at Ballynahinch Castle on the river, one at Rosleague Manor above Ballinakill Bay, and a single place each day at the hour it is best: Dogs Bay, the Sky Road, the Inagh Valley, Kylemore, Inishbofin and Killary.

The places we recommend to friends.

If you want the west without the coaches:

→ Arrive through Galway. Leave north to Mayo, or back to Galway.

→ Two bases only: Ballynahinch, then Rosleague. Unpack once.

→ One big place a day, at the right hour. Fires by five.

Route Overview

Two Bases, Four Nights, One Wild Country

  • Day 1: Galway, Oughterard and the N59 west to Ballynahinch.
  • Day 2: Roundstone, Dogs Bay at low tide, the Sky Road at six.
  • Day 3: The Inagh Valley, Kylemore after three, north to Rosleague.
  • Day 4: The Cleggan ferry to Inishbofin and back.
  • Day 5: Killary from the water, then Westport or Galway.

Connemara rewards fewer miles than the map suggests. This route is built on that.

Oughterard is where the stone walls start. Keep going.

Into the bog road
01

Into the bog road

Through Galway, west on the N59, tea by the fire.

Quick Read

What this day is: Arrival day, one beautiful drive, nothing else.

Best way to do it: A driver from Shannon or Dublin if you have flown overnight. Narrow roads and jet lag do not mix.

What you'll remember: The first sight of the river from your window at Ballynahinch.

The Day

Morning

Land, collect the car or meet the driver.

Midday

Lunch in Galway, then west along Lough Corrib to Oughterard.

Afternoon

The N59 through Maam Cross to Recess and Ballynahinch.

Evening

A drink by the library fire, dinner looking at the river.

Signature Moment

→ The river walk before dinner, the castle lit behind you.

What People Get Wrong

Stopping at Kylemore on the way in. Save it for an afternoon when the coaches have gone.

The Ireland Edit Take

Ask for a river-facing room. On a Connemara estate, the view is the room.

What We'd Book First

Three bookings decide this week. Make them first.

  • 1.Ballynahinch Castle, three nights, river-facing. The river rooms go first in June and September.
  • 2.Rosleague Manor, one night, bay-facing. A small country house; book with the castle, not after.
  • 3.The Inishbofin ferry and the Killary boat. Both run by season and weather. Confirm sailings when you book.
Roundstone, Dogs Bay and the Sky Road
02

Roundstone, Dogs Bay and the Sky Road

A harbour lunch, a shell beach, the headland in late light.

Quick Read

What this day is: The coast day: one beach, one road, both at the right hour.

Best way to do it: Check the tide. Dogs Bay at low water, the Sky Road after five.

What you'll remember: Water the colour of a swimming pool, on the Atlantic.

The Day

Morning

Slow breakfast, the woodland loop along the river.

Midday

Lunch on Roundstone harbour.

Afternoon

Dogs Bay, then across the tombolo to Gurteen.

Evening

The Sky Road anti-clockwise from Clifden, upper viewpoint. Dinner in Clifden or back at the castle.

Signature Moment

→ The upper Sky Road viewpoint at six, the islands laid out below.

What People Get Wrong

Driving the Sky Road at midday from the lower car park. Wrong light, wrong angle.

The Ireland Edit Take

If a hard westerly is blowing, swap the order: Sky Road in the first bright spell, Roundstone for the rest.

Experiences

Today you move north. One short drive, two places, a new fire.

The Inagh Valley and Kylemore
03

The Inagh Valley and Kylemore

The mountain road mid-morning, the abbey after the crowds.

Quick Read

What this day is: The mountain day, ending at a manor on the bay.

Best way to do it: Leave Ballynahinch mid-morning. Kylemore after three, Rosleague by six.

What you'll remember: Engine off at Lough Inagh, the cloud coming off the Twelve Bens.

The Day

Morning

North through the Inagh Valley. Stop at Lough Inagh.

Midday

A light lunch in Letterfrack, or a walk in Connemara National Park.

Afternoon

Kylemore after three: the lake path to the Gothic church, then the walled garden.

Evening

Check in at Rosleague Manor. Dinner looking down Ballinakill Bay.

Signature Moment

→ The walled garden in late afternoon light, almost empty.

What People Get Wrong

Queueing for the abbey interior. The church and garden are the reason to come.

The Ireland Edit Take

Kylemore is the one place in Connemara that needs timing. Get it right and it is the highlight of the week.

Inagh ValleyKylemore AbbeyRosleague Manor
Inishbofin
04

Inishbofin

The Cleggan ferry, an island walk, back by evening.

Quick Read

What this day is: The island day, and the quietest walking on the coast.

Best way to do it: Check the crossing the night before. Book the ferry direct.

What you'll remember: The harbour coming into view after forty minutes of open water.

The Day

Morning

Ten minutes to Cleggan pier for the crossing.

Midday

Walk the island's loops, lunch on the harbour.

Afternoon

Back on the mainland. A walk on Cleggan Head if the light holds.

Evening

Dinner at Rosleague.

Signature Moment

→ The island harbour at low sun, the year keeping its old shape.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to fit Inishbofin into a day that also includes Kylemore. It needs the whole day.

The Ireland Edit Take

If you can add a night, stay on the island. The day boats leave and the place you were promised arrives.

Killary, then onward
05

Killary, then onward

The fjord from the water, the falls, the road north or south.

Quick Read

What this day is: Departure, by way of the most dramatic water in the west.

Best way to do it: A morning boat on Killary, then Westport for Mayo or the N59 back to Galway.

What you'll remember: Mountains on both shores, the mussel ropes in lines across the water.

The Day

Morning

Killary Harbour by boat from Nancy's Point.

Lunch is wherever the morning ended up. Do not drive across town for a table.

Midday

Aasleagh Falls at the head of the harbour, lunch in Leenaune.

Afternoon

North through Delphi to Westport, or back to Galway for the onward flight.

Signature Moment

→ The middle of the fjord, the only place its size makes sense.

What People Get Wrong

Seeing Killary only from the road. It is a water view.

The Ireland Edit Take

This is how we join Connemara to a Mayo week. The Delphi valley is the best exit in the west.

Experiences

Why two bases, not four.

Connemara roads are slow by design. Moving every night turns the trip into a drive.

  • Ballynahinch holds the south. Roundstone, Dogs Bay, the Sky Road and the Inagh Valley within an easy drive.
  • Rosleague holds the north. Kylemore, Cleggan for Inishbofin, and Killary from the door.
