A cinematic plot of the journey. Tap a numbered pin to open the day, base hotel and stop.

You've landed. Dublin gives you a slow start before the road.

Dublin at The Merrion
01

Dublin at The Merrion

Land. Junior Suite. Bath. The honeymoon starts at check-in, not at some castle three hours away.

Quick Read

What this day is: Arrival, The Merrion Junior Suite, Drawing Room tea, Patrick Guilbaud at 7:30pm.

Best way to do it: Pre-book the Junior Suite with the freestanding bath. Not a standard, not a garden room.

What you'll remember: The first bath in the Junior Suite after the Patrick Guilbaud tasting menu.

The Day

Morning

Aer Lingus into Dublin around 6:50am. Taxi to The Merrion. Junior Suite with the freestanding bath, requested at booking not at reception. Bags in by 9am even if the room isn't ready.

Midday

Walk Merrion Square. Coffee at Network on South William Street. Back to the hotel for check-in at noon.

Afternoon

Afternoon tea in the Drawing Room at 3:30pm. Near the fireplace, not the centre. The art collection on the walls is museum-grade. Don't rush it.

Evening

Patrick Guilbaud at 7:30pm. Window table over the garden, eight-course tasting menu, the Champagne pairing the sommelier offers when you tell her you're celebrating. Cheese trolley between courses seven and eight. In bed by 11pm.

Signature Moment

The first bath in the Junior Suite after the Patrick Guilbaud tasting menu. The honeymoon has officially begun.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a standard Main House double instead of the Junior Suite. The room faces Upper Merrion Street where taxis idle until midnight. The two-hundred-dollar nightly upgrade is the single best money you'll spend on the trip.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book the Junior Suite, not a standard, not a garden room. The Junior Suite has the freestanding bath. The garden rooms are quieter but don't have it.

Day one was arrival. Today the city opens up.

Dublin, Slowly

Dublin, Slowly

Private gallery tour, a long Etto lunch, Dalkey, The Cellar dinner. The day Dublin earns its two nights.

Quick Read

What this day is: Private gallery, Etto lunch, Dalkey kayak, quiet Cellar dinner.

Best way to do it: Private luxury Dublin tour through the concierge for the morning, DART to Dalkey in the afternoon.

What you'll remember: The Caravaggio at the National Gallery with a guide and no crowd.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Walk the National Gallery yourselves, then walk to Etto.

Who it's for: Couples who'd rather wander than schedule.

Trade-off: You miss the private-tour access and the curator's commentary.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private luxury Dublin tour, including a private gallery access slot booked through the concierge. About 3.5 hours, finishes at Etto for lunch.

Why it's better: Honeymoon mornings should not be spent in queues. The private tour skips them.

Trade-off: Single-day cost. Pays for itself in the gallery alone.

The Day

Morning

Slow Merrion breakfast in the Garden Room. Private gallery slot at the National Gallery at 10am, booked through the concierge two weeks ahead. The Caravaggio and the Yeats collection without the public crowd.

Midday

Long Etto lunch at 12:15pm. Left-wall table. Cacio e pepe and a bottle of the house Vermentino. Two-hour lunch.

Afternoon

DART to Dalkey at 3pm. Kayak around Dalkey Island with the guide who takes you past the seal colony on the south side. Return by 5:30pm. Walk up to Killiney Hill for sunset. The bench at the obelisk has the bay angle.

Evening

The Cellar at The Merrion for a quiet brasserie dinner. Or room service in the Junior Suite with the bath afterward. Resist the instinct to fill both Dublin nights with Michelin.

The Better Version of This Day

Private Luxury Dublin Tour

Your private guide covers the city in a luxury car, with the kind of access a private tour buys: gallery slots, a slow Trinity walk, Georgian Dublin without the queues.

Honeymoon mornings should not be spent waiting in line. The private tour turns Dublin into a series of rooms you walk into, not queues you stand in.

Hotel pickup in a luxury car. About 3.5 hours, finishing at Etto for lunch.

Reserve the Day 2 private Dublin tour →

Signature Moment

The walk back from Killiney Hill at sunset, the bay below, knowing the road west starts in the morning.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Etto for lunch. The Cellar at The Merrion for dinner.

Order: Etto: cacio e pepe, a bottle of Vermentino. Cellar: bistro classics.

When: Etto 12:15pm. Cellar 8pm.

Skip: Two-Michelin twice in two nights. You will burn out.

The Ireland Edit Take

The private gallery slot is the morning no one else will suggest because it requires calling the concierge. Caravaggio without the crowd is a different painting.

What We'd Book First

Five anchor hotels and two Michelin restaurants. Lock these the day flights confirm.

  • 1.The Merrion Junior Suite, Ashford Castle Lakeview, Adare Manor Stateroom, Sheen Falls river-view, The Shelbourne. All five fill four to six months out for May to September. Book them in one sitting.
  • 2.Patrick Guilbaud and Chapter One. Two two-Michelin restaurants, the day you confirm flights. Both open four months out.
  • 3.The Doolin helicopter flight on Day 5. Twenty minutes, sunset, the photo you will frame. Book 4 weeks out directly through Doolin Air.

Dublin recedes. Cong, by tea time.

The road west to the most theatrical castle hotel in Ireland. Two nights here, deliberately.

Quick Read

What this day is: Pick up the automatic, drive to Cong, walk the lake path, Dungeon Bar lunch, George V dinner.

The Day

Morning

Pick up the automatic at Europcar on Nassau Street at 9am. West on the M6 and N84 to Cong. About three hours. Stop at Athlone for coffee.

Midday

Check in at Ashford Castle by 1pm. Lakeview Deluxe room, not a Courtyard room. The lake at dawn is the moment, not the courtyard. Lunch at the Dungeon Bar at 1:30pm. Stone-arch table by the window. Castle burger, a glass of Guinness.

Afternoon

Walk the lakeside path from the main entrance to the boathouse before you do anything else. Lake cruise on Lough Corrib at 3:30pm, ninety minutes past the ruins on Inchagoill.

Evening

George V Room at 8pm, jacket required. Round table by the window over the lake. Tasting menu with the sommelier's pairing. The painted ceiling and candlelight make this the most theatrical dining room in Ireland.

Signature Moment

Standing on the boathouse path on arrival, the lake silver, the castle behind you, and realising you have two nights here.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a Courtyard room to save the money. The Courtyard is a different hotel. The Lakeview Deluxe at dawn is the honeymoon moment.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book Lakeview Deluxe, not Courtyard. Book the George V at 8pm the day the room is confirmed.

Who it's for: Couples who want a flexible afternoon.

Trade-off: You miss the Coral Strand. Most rentals don't know it.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private Connemara day, Ashford as start and end. Includes the Coral Strand at Carraroe, Kylemore Abbey, Clifden lunch.

Why it's better: The Coral Strand is the secret most guests never hear. With a private driver you go.

Trade-off: Tour cost on top of the rental. Worth it for the strand alone.

The Day

Morning

Falconry walk at 8am, never 10am. Dawn light through the estate woodland is the point. Book the second-morning slot. After one night on the estate the experience lands properly. Back to the hotel for breakfast.

Midday

Driver collects at 11am for the Connemara day. North to the Coral Strand at Carraroe, a beach made entirely of white coral. Lunch at Mitchell's in Clifden, bar seat, fish and chips landed that morning at the pier 200 metres away.

Afternoon

Kylemore Abbey on the way back, walk the lake path for thirty minutes. Back at Ashford by 4pm. Couples' treatment at The Spa at 4:30pm. The 90-minute hot stone, not the 60-minute.

Evening

Cullen's at the Cottage. Whatever the chef is running. The menu changes daily.

The Better Version of This Day

Connemara and Galway Private Chauffeur Tour

Your private chauffeur drives the Connemara coast daily and knows the Coral Strand turnoff, the Clifden lunch table at the pier, and the Sky Road layby for the photograph.

Connemara on a public tour is a coach window. On a private day it's a beach made of coral and a Clifden lunch with fish landed that morning.

Ashford as start and end. Coral Strand, Clifden lunch, Kylemore, back by 4pm for the spa.

Reserve the Day 4 Connemara day →

Signature Moment

Standing in the dawn woodland with a Harris hawk on your glove, the estate silent, and Ireland for an instant belonging to the two of you.

What People Get Wrong

Booking falconry at 10am. The morning groups overlap, it becomes a tour, and the dawn light is gone. Always the second-morning 8am slot.

The Ireland Edit Take

The Coral Strand is the secret. Forty minutes from Ashford, entirely white coral, and most guests never hear about it. Mention it to the concierge and watch their reaction.

Cliffs of Moher, Helicopter, Adare Manor
05

Cliffs of Moher, Helicopter, Adare Manor

South via the Cliffs and a sunset helicopter. One night at Adare. The single most cinematic day on the trip.

Quick Read

What this day is: Drive south through the Burren, Cliffs of Moher walk, Doolin sunset helicopter, Adare Manor by 6:30pm.

Best way to do it: Self-drive the morning. Doolin Air helicopter at 4:30pm. Drive to Adare after.

Afternoon

Cliffs of Moher at 2pm. Walk south from O'Brien's Tower along the cliff-edge path for forty-five minutes. After ten minutes the path narrows, the crowds thin, and you are alone on a cliff above the Atlantic. Helicopter from Doolin Pier at 4:30pm. Twenty minutes, sunset over the Cliffs, the pilot banks over the Aran Islands.

Evening

Drive 75 minutes on the N18 and N21 to Adare Manor. Dinner in the Oak Room at 8pm, jacket required. Fireplace table, tasting menu, the sommelier's Irish wine pairing.

The Better Version of This Day

Cliffs of Moher Private Mercedes Luxury Tour

Your driver-guide is the alternative if you'd rather not drive Day 5. Private Mercedes from Ashford or Galway, including the boat trip beneath the cliffs.

One of the most comfortable ways to experience the Cliffs while avoiding the bus tours. The boat trip beneath the cliffs is an experience most visitors never get.

Private Mercedes, the cliffs from above and below, then dropped at Adare.

Reserve the Day 5 Cliffs tour →

Signature Moment

The bank over the Aran Islands at 4:50pm with the Cliffs in golden light, the open door of the helicopter, and the photograph that will sit on a mantel for the rest of your lives.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Gus O'Connor's in Doolin for lunch. Oak Room at Adare for dinner.

Order: Doolin: seafood chowder. Oak Room: tasting menu, Irish wine pairing.

When: Doolin 12:15pm. Oak Room 8pm.

Skip: The cliffside coach lunch. Doolin is fifteen minutes away and twice as good.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a Manor Room in the new wing instead of a Stateroom in the original building. The Statesrooms have the original plasterwork, the higher ceilings, the castle views.

The Ireland Edit Take

The helicopter is the splurge most couples regret not booking. Twenty minutes, sunset, the Aran Islands on the bank. Book directly through Doolin Air.

The Better Version of This Day

Signature Moment

The walk hand in hand across the Derrynane sandbar at low tide. White sand, the medieval abbey ruin ahead, and not another couple in sight.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to drop the rental in town instead of at the airport. Returning a rental at 11pm to a Dublin city office with honeymoon luggage is how the trip ends on a sour note.
