The Ring of Kerry on Day 2, the Dingle Peninsula on Day 3, the South coast slowly. Built for couples who want a short, intimate honeymoon, not a tour.

If you want a honeymoon in the South done right:

→ Fly Shannon in, Cork out. The open-jaw is what makes 5 nights feel like 7.

→ Three nights at Sheen Falls Lodge, river-view room. Two at Perryville House, bow-window.

→ Two bookings decide the trip: the Sheen Falls river-view and the Perryville House bow-window.

Route Overview

5 Nights, Two Bases, One Open-Jaw Flight

  • Day 1: Land Shannon. Cliffs of Moher en route. Sheen Falls by sunset.
  • Day 2: Ring of Kerry, counter-clockwise. Derrynane sandbar at low tide.
  • Day 3: Dingle Peninsula. Slea Head. Back to Sheen Falls.
  • Day 4: Transfer south through Cork to Kinsale. Perryville House.

You've landed at Shannon. Kerry is south, but the Cliffs are on the way.

Shannon, the Cliffs, and Kenmare by Sunset
01

Shannon, the Cliffs, and Kenmare by Sunset

The honeymoon starts at the cliffs and ends with a G&T on the terrace at Sheen Falls.

Quick Read

What this day is: Shannon arrival, Cliffs of Moher en route, Sheen Falls Lodge by 6pm.

Best way to do it: The private Cliffs of Moher Mercedes tour with Shannon hotel pickup. You arrive at Sheen Falls fresh, not frazzled.

What you'll remember: The first G&T on the Sheen Falls terrace, the cascade silver below, the bay west.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Rent at Shannon, drive the N67 coast road to the Cliffs, then south on the N86 to Tralee and into Kenmare. About 4.5 hours with stops.

Who it's for: Couples who want the car for the next four days.

Trade-off: Day 1 is your jet-lag day. The driver is the gift.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private Mercedes Cliffs of Moher tour with Shannon pickup. Cliffs by mid-morning, lunch in Doolin, dropped at Sheen Falls Lodge by 6pm.

Why it's better: You see the Cliffs the day you land instead of losing them to a later detour. And you arrive at the honeymoon hotel rested.

Trade-off: Single-day cost. Pays for itself in calmness.

The Day

Morning

Aer Lingus into Shannon around 8am. The private driver is at arrivals. North on the N67 to the Cliffs of Moher by 11am. Walk south from O'Brien's Tower for thirty minutes. The crowd thins after ten.

Midday

Lunch in Doolin at 1pm. Pub seafood chowder, a half pint, brown bread. Forty-five minutes, then south.

Afternoon

Down through Tralee on the N86. Into Kenmare by 5:30pm. Check in at Sheen Falls Lodge. River-view room, request it at the moment you book. Bath, change.

Evening

G&T on the terrace at 7:30pm. The terrace faces west and the evening light on Kenmare Bay in summer is the moment the trip starts. Dinner in the Falls Restaurant, window table nearest the waterfall. Tasting menu, Kerry lamb. In bed by 11pm.

The Better Version of This Day

Cliffs of Moher Private Mercedes Luxury Tour

Your driver-guide collects you at Shannon arrivals, drives the coast road north to the Cliffs, lunches you in Doolin, and delivers you to Kenmare by sunset.

Instead of driving jet-lagged on the wrong side of the road on day one, you arrive at the honeymoon hotel rested. The Cliffs come to you, not the other way around.

Shannon arrivals pickup, Cliffs walk, Doolin lunch, Kenmare drop. About 7 hours, all driving handled.

Reserve the Day 1 Cliffs transfer →

Signature Moment

The first G&T on the Sheen Falls terrace at 7:30pm, the cascade silver below, Kenmare Bay in evening light.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Pub lunch in Doolin. Falls Restaurant dinner at Sheen Falls.

Order: Doolin: seafood chowder, brown bread. Falls Restaurant: tasting menu with Kerry lamb.

When: Doolin around 1pm. Falls Restaurant at 8:30pm.

Skip: Dinner outside the hotel on arrival night. You won't make it past dessert.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a courtyard-view room because the river-view sold out. The river-view IS the honeymoon. Book six months out, alongside flights.

The Ireland Edit Take

Fly Shannon, not Dublin. Saves four hours of driving over a 5-night trip and gets you to Kenmare in daylight on arrival day. The private Cliffs transfer is the unlock that turns a jet-lagged drive into the opening scene.

What We'd Book First

Three bookings decide this South honeymoon. Lock these the week you confirm flights.

  • 1.Open-jaw flights: Shannon in, Cork out. Aer Lingus runs both. The open-jaw is what makes 5 nights feel like 7.
  • 2.Sheen Falls Lodge, three nights, river-view room. Fills four months out for May to September. The river-view IS the honeymoon.
  • 3.Perryville House, two nights, harbour-view bow-window room. Twelve rooms total. The bow-window fills six months ahead.

You woke at Sheen Falls. The Ring starts at the gate.

The Ring of Kerry, Counter-Clockwise
02

The Ring of Kerry, Counter-Clockwise

The most romantic single day of driving in Ireland, and the one most couples get wrong.

Quick Read

What this day is: Counter-clockwise from Kenmare, Kerry Cliffs, Derrynane sandbar at low tide, back to Sheen Falls by sunset.

Best way to do it: Private driver-guide. Counter-clockwise. The buses go clockwise. You never see one.

What you'll remember: Walking hand in hand across the Derrynane sandbar to the medieval abbey ruin.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Take your rental counter-clockwise from Kenmare. Killorglin, Kerry Cliffs, Derrynane, back via Sneem.

Who it's for: Confident couples who don't mind the single-lane sections.

Trade-off: You drive instead of look. On a honeymoon, that matters.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private Ring of Kerry tour from Kenmare. Counter-clockwise route, Kerry Cliffs viewpoint, Derrynane sandbar, returned to Sheen Falls by 5:30pm.

Why it's better: Your driver checks the tides for Derrynane the night before and the laybys for photographs. You hold hands instead of the wheel.

Trade-off: More than a rental day. The right answer for a honeymoon.

The Day

Morning

Slow Sheen Falls breakfast on the river terrace. Driver collects you at 9am. North to Killorglin, then counter-clockwise.

Midday

Kerry Cliffs viewpoint at noon. €4 each, closer to the Skelligs than Moher. Lunch at the Butler Arms in Waterville at 1pm. Seafood chowder, a pot of tea.

Afternoon

Derrynane Beach at 2:30pm. Low tide exposes the sandbar to Abbey Island. You walk across hand in hand to a medieval abbey ruin. The most romantic thirty minutes in Kerry.

Evening

Back at Sheen Falls by 5:30pm. Couples' treatment in the river-view treatment room at 5:45pm, ninety-minute hot stone. Dinner at La Cascade. Earlier, lighter. Bed by 10:30pm.

The Better Version of This Day

Ring of Kerry Private Tour

Your driver-guide drives the Ring counter-clockwise daily. Knows the tide table for Derrynane and the layby at the Kerry Cliffs for the Skellig photograph.

You see the Ring without ever passing a coach. Derrynane is timed for low tide, which most couples never hear about.

Hotel pickup, counter-clockwise route, Kerry Cliffs, Derrynane at low tide, returned to Sheen Falls by sunset.

Reserve the Day 2 Ring of Kerry →

Signature Moment

The walk hand in hand across the Derrynane sandbar at low tide. White sand, the medieval abbey ruin ahead, and not another couple in sight.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Butler Arms in Waterville for lunch. La Cascade at Sheen Falls for dinner.

Order: Butler Arms: seafood chowder. La Cascade: river-view table, the lighter tasting.

When: Butler Arms 1pm. La Cascade 8pm after the spa.

Skip: Killarney town for lunch. Detour adds an hour and the food is worse than Waterville.

What People Get Wrong

Driving the Ring clockwise. Every coach in Kerry goes clockwise. You spend the day on single-lane edges trying to pass them.

The Ireland Edit Take

Counter-clockwise is the trick. The Derrynane sandbar crossing at low tide is the most romantic moment on the Ring, and most couples drive past it because they don't check the tides. Have your driver check them the night before.

Yesterday was Kerry. Today is the peninsula next door.

Dingle Peninsula, Slea Head, and Slow
03

Dingle Peninsula, Slea Head, and Slow

The Atlantic edge of Ireland. The road most travel writers call the best in the country.

Quick Read

What this day is: Private Dingle tour from Kenmare. Slea Head Drive, Dunquin Pier, Dingle town, back to Sheen Falls.

Best way to do it: Private four-hour Dingle tour. Slea Head with someone who knows where to stop.

What you'll remember: The view from Slea Head with the Blasket Islands off the coast.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive yourselves over the Conor Pass to Dingle, then Slea Head clockwise.

Who it's for: Couples who don't mind Conor Pass weather and tight Slea Head bends.

Trade-off: Slea Head has no laybys. You drive past the views, not into them.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private four-hour Dingle Peninsula tour. Slea Head Drive with stops at Dunbeg Fort, Dunquin Pier, Coumeenoole Beach. Dingle town for late lunch.

Why it's better: Slea Head is single-lane and the views are at the bends. With a driver, you look.

Trade-off: Tour cost on top of the rental. Worth it for the photographs alone.

The Day

Morning

Driver collects at 9am. Over the Conor Pass to Dingle by 10:45am. Coffee in Dingle town, walk to the harbour for ten minutes.

Midday

Slea Head Drive clockwise from Dingle. Stops at Dunbeg Fort, Dunquin Pier (the road down to the boats), and Coumeenoole Beach. Back into Dingle town by 1:30pm for lunch.

Afternoon

Lunch at a Dingle harbour spot, 90 minutes. Then back over the pass and into Kenmare by 5:30pm.

Evening

Walk the Sheen Falls grounds before dinner. Dinner in Kenmare town tonight, not at the hotel. Try a small Kenmare restaurant and walk the town after dark.

The Better Version of This Day

Dingle Peninsula Four Hour Private Tour

Your private guide drives Slea Head daily and knows which bends to pull over at, which photograph is at Dunquin Pier, and where the seal colony off Coumeenoole sits at low tide.

Slea Head Drive is the most beautiful road in Ireland. With a private guide you stop at the hidden spots most visitors miss.

Private four-hour tour, Slea Head clockwise, Dingle town lunch slot, returned to Sheen Falls by 5:30pm.

Reserve the Day 3 Dingle tour →

Signature Moment

Standing at Dunquin Pier with the road snaking down to the boats and the Blasket Islands offshore. The most photographed pier in Ireland for a reason.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Dingle town for lunch.

Order: Fish landed that morning, a pint of the local stout.

When: 1:30pm, after Slea Head.

Skip: Eating on the Slea Head loop. Nothing there is worth the stop. Wait for Dingle town.

What People Get Wrong

Driving Slea Head counter-clockwise. The road is signposted clockwise, the views open in the right direction clockwise, and the coach traffic is one-way. Always clockwise on Slea Head.

The Ireland Edit Take

Two peninsulas in two days is a lot. The hot stone yesterday and a Kenmare-town dinner tonight is the rhythm that keeps it from feeling like a tour.

Kerry recedes. The South coast opens up.

Kenmare to Kinsale
04

Kenmare to Kinsale

Transfer day, done as a slow drive through Cork and into the harbour town.

Quick Read

What this day is: Slow Sheen Falls morning, drive east via Cork to Kinsale, check in at Perryville House.

Best way to do it: Self-drive or a private transfer. Both work. Two-and-a-half hours either way.

What you'll remember: The bow-window seat at Perryville House with a glass of wine and the harbour outside.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive yourselves east on the N22 to Cork, drop into the English Market for lunch, then south to Kinsale by 4pm.

Who it's for: Couples who want a Cork lunch stop and a flexible afternoon.

Trade-off: You're driving on the day you'd most like to nap.

Guided Version

Pre-booked private transfer Kenmare to Kinsale via the English Market. Mercedes, 2.5 hours including a lunch stop.

Why it's better: The transfer day is the wrong day to drive. Hand it off, lunch in Cork, arrive at Perryville rested.

Trade-off: Single-day cost on top of the rental return.

The Day

Morning

Slow breakfast on the river terrace at Sheen Falls. Check-out by 11am. East on the N22.

Midday

Cork city by 12:45pm. Lunch in the English Market, the upstairs gallery for the view down. Forty-five minutes. South on the R600 to Kinsale.

Afternoon

Kinsale by 3pm. Check in at Perryville House, harbour-view bow-window room. The bow-window IS the room. Walk the harbour wall before dinner.

Evening

Dinner at Bastion at 7:30pm. Tasting menu, Cork wine pairing. A block back from the waterfront, twice as good as anything on it. Drink at The Spaniard after, by the fire.

Signature Moment

The first hour in the bow-window at Perryville House, a glass of wine, the harbour lights coming on outside.

Where You'll Eat

Where: English Market upstairs gallery for lunch. Bastion for dinner.

Order: Market: a sit-down lunch from one of the gallery counters. Bastion: tasting menu, Cork wine pairing.

When: Market 12:45pm. Bastion 7:30pm. The Spaniard at 9:30pm.

Skip: Eating on the Kinsale waterfront. Pretty but mediocre. Bastion is a block back and twice as good.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a back-facing room at Perryville House to save a hundred euro. The bow-window IS the honeymoon room. Twelve rooms total, the bow-window fills six months ahead.

The Ireland Edit Take

The English Market lunch turns a transfer day into part of the trip. Twenty minutes off the road for one of the great food halls in Europe. Then south to Kinsale.

Five mornings in, one to go.

Kinsale, Charles Fort, and the Drive Home
05

Kinsale, Charles Fort, and the Drive Home

A slow Kinsale morning, the harbour fort in the afternoon, a farewell dinner, and the morning flight from Cork.

Quick Read

What this day is: Late breakfast, harbour walk, Charles Fort, farewell dinner at Bastion, Cork airport in the morning.

Best way to do it: Book the next-morning Cork to US flight, not tonight. Close the honeymoon properly.

What you'll remember: The view from the Charles Fort star bastion across the harbour to Kinsale town.

The Day

Morning

Late breakfast at Perryville House. Walk to Scilly Walk, the path along the harbour to Summercove, forty minutes one way.

Midday

Charles Fort at noon. €5 each, ninety minutes. The star bastion has the harbour photograph. Walk back to Kinsale via Summercove and the Bulman pub for a half pint.

Afternoon

Slow Kinsale afternoon. Bookshop, harbour benches, a coffee. Bath before dinner.

Evening

Farewell dinner at Bastion at 7:30pm, or back at Perryville's own dining room. Last drink at The Spaniard by 10pm. In bed by 11.

Signature Moment

The view from the star bastion at Charles Fort across the harbour to Kinsale town. The closing photograph of the honeymoon.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Bastion for dinner, second time. Or Perryville's dining room for a quieter close.

Order: Bastion: chef's tasting and the cheese plate. Perryville: whatever the kitchen is running.

When: 7:30pm either way. Last drink at The Spaniard 9:30pm.

Skip: A 7pm Cork flight on the last night. Adds an airport sprint to a slow closing day.

What People Get Wrong

Skipping Charles Fort. The harbour view from the star bastion is the Kinsale photograph most visitors miss.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book the Cork to US flight for the next morning, not tonight. A late evening at The Spaniard and a slow morning at Perryville close the trip the way a honeymoon should close.

Experiences

Three private days, two anchor rooms, one Atlantic coast.

The Cliffs transfer on Day 1, the Ring on Day 2, the Dingle Peninsula on Day 3. Days 4 and 5 are the slow close.

  • The Cliffs of Moher private Mercedes transfer turns Day 1 into the opening scene. Shannon pickup, Cliffs walk, Doolin lunch, Kenmare by 6pm.
  • The Ring of Kerry counter-clockwise is the trick. You never see a coach. Derrynane at low tide is the romantic moment most couples miss.
  • The Dingle private tour is the second peninsula. Slea Head clockwise with a guide who stops at the bends.
