5 Slow Days in West Cork
Five days past Kinsale, where the day-trippers stop. Two nights by the beach at Inchydoney, two in the East Wing of Bantry House, and short drives between harbours, headlands and long lunches. Then out over the Healy Pass into Kerry, or back to Cork.
The places we recommend to friends.

If you want the coast without the coaches:
→ Fly into Cork. Leave via Kenmare and Kerry, or loop back.
→ Two bases only: Inchydoney, then Bantry House. No daily packing.
→ One headland or harbour a day. Never more than about an hour and a half at the wheel.
Route Overview
Two Bases, Four Nights, One Coast
- Day 1: Cork Airport, lunch in Kinsale, on to Inchydoney by the beach.
- Day 2: Baltimore by boat to Sherkin, crab at Bushe's, Lough Hyne after dark.
- Day 3: Move west. Mizen Head early, Barleycove at low water, Bantry House by evening.
- Day 4: The Sheep's Head drive. The house and terraces after the gates close.
- Day 5: The Healy Pass into Kerry, or the N71 back toward Cork.
West Cork rewards fewer miles than the map suggests. This route is built on that.
Kinsale is where most people stop. You keep going.

Cork, Kinsale, Inchydoney
Land, lunch by the harbour, keep driving west.
Quick Read
What this day is: Arrival day with one long lunch and a short drive to the sea.
Best way to do it: A driver from Cork Airport if you have flown overnight. Driving on the left on day one is the mistake.
What you'll remember: The first walk on Inchydoney beach as the light goes.
The Day
Morning
Land at Cork. Collect the car or meet the driver.
Midday
Lunch in Kinsale, then a slow walk around the harbour.
Afternoon
West through Timoleague to Clonakilty and the causeway out to Inchydoney.
Evening
Dinner at the hotel. Early night. The beach is there in the morning.
Signature Moment
→ Shoes off on the sand at Inchydoney, the jet lag going with the tide.
What People Get Wrong
Staying in Kinsale. It is lovely, and it is where the coaches turn around.
The Ireland Edit Take
Ask for a sea-facing room at Inchydoney. On a beach base, the view is the room.
Where to Stay
What We'd Book First
Three bookings decide this week. Make them first.
- 1.Bantry House East Wing, two nights. A handful of rooms in a lived-in house. Ask about August festival dates.
- 2.Inchydoney, two nights, sea-facing. The beach rooms go first in June and September.
- 3.Restaurant Chestnut, if before 30 October 2026. Its last service is announced for that date.

Baltimore and Lough Hyne
A boat in the morning, crab at noon, a lake at night.
Quick Read
What this day is: The harbour day, ending on the salt lake at Lough Hyne.
Best way to do it: Drive to Baltimore after breakfast, take the short ferry to Sherkin, come back for lunch.
What you'll remember: Paddling Lough Hyne in the dark.
The Day
Morning
Baltimore and the ferry across to Sherkin Island. Walk, then come back.
Midday
Crab sandwiches and a pint at Bushe's Bar on the square, the ferries coming and going below.
Afternoon
Back to Inchydoney. Spa or the beach. Nothing else.
Evening
Night kayak on Lough Hyne with a local operator. Book ahead and check it runs on your date.
Signature Moment
→ Paddles down on the dark water at Lough Hyne, and nobody saying anything.
What People Get Wrong
Trying to fit Mizen Head in as well. It gets its own morning tomorrow.
The Ireland Edit Take
If the weather cancels the kayak, walk up Knockomagh Wood above the lake at sunset instead.
Pack once. This is the only move until you leave.

The Mizen, then Bantry
Ireland's most southwesterly point, then the move to the second base.
Quick Read
What this day is: The headland morning, the beach at low water and the drive up to Bantry Bay.
Best way to do it: Be at Mizen Head when it opens, before the day's traffic arrives.
What you'll remember: The bridge over the gully at Mizen, with the gannets below.
The Day
Morning
Mizen Head at opening. Cross the bridge with the light behind you.
Midday
Barleycove at low water, then a late lunch in Crookhaven.
Afternoon
Through Schull and Ballydehob, north to Bantry. Look for Gubbeen and Durrus cheese on the way.
Evening
Check in to the East Wing. Walk the terraces once the day visitors have gone.
Signature Moment
→ The terraces of Bantry House at dusk, with the bay to yourself.
Where You'll Eat
Where: Restaurant Chestnut, Ballydehob, if your dates fall before its last service on 30 October 2026.
Order: The tasting menu. It is cooked from the producers you passed today.
When: Book the moment your dates are set.
Skip: Assuming it is open after 30 October 2026. It is not; eat at Levis' Corner House or your hotel table instead.
What People Get Wrong
Arriving at Mizen Head at noon. Paths start closing from 4.30pm in high summer, and midday is the busiest slot.
The Ireland Edit Take
Do the Mizen on the move day. It sits between the two bases, so it costs no extra driving.

Sheep's Head and the house
The quietest peninsula, then a long evening at home.
Quick Read
What this day is: One peninsula drive and an unhurried afternoon at Bantry House.
Best way to do it: Drive the Sheep's Head loop in the morning. Back for the gardens and the hundred steps.
What you'll remember: The view down over Bantry Bay from the top of the hundred steps.
The Day
Morning
The Sheep's Head drive. Stop at the end and walk out toward the lighthouse.
Midday
Picnic: Durrus cheese, brown bread, whatever the village shop has.
Afternoon
Bantry House gardens and the hundred steps.
Evening
Dinner in Bantry. A pint. Nothing booked tomorrow before ten.
Signature Moment
→ The top of the hundred steps, Bantry Bay below and the house behind you.
What People Get Wrong
Swapping Sheep's Head for the Ring of Kerry. The Ring is busier and you will see Kerry tomorrow anyway.
The Ireland Edit Take
The estate sometimes closes for weddings and events. If it does, take the boat from Glengarriff to Garinish instead.

Over the Healy Pass
The best exit in Ireland, or a gentle loop back.
Quick Read
What this day is: Departure, or onward to Kerry, by the most beautiful road out.
Best way to do it: Leave after breakfast. Glengarriff, Adrigole, then the pass by late morning.
What you'll remember: Both counties at once from the top: Bantry Bay behind, Kerry ahead.
The Day
Morning
Breakfast at the house, then west through Glengarriff to Adrigole.
Lunch is wherever the morning ended up. Do not drive across town for a table.
Midday
The Healy Pass over the Caha Mountains. Stop at the top.
Afternoon
Down into Kerry toward Kenmare, or the N71 back toward Cork Airport.
Signature Moment
→ The car stopped at the county line, looking back at the week you just had.
What People Get Wrong
Taking the pass in poor visibility. If it is clouded in, use the N71 through the Caha Pass tunnels.
The Ireland Edit Take
This is how we join West Cork to a Kerry week. It turns a transfer into the best hour of driving on the trip.
Experiences
Experiences
Why two bases, not four.
West Cork roads are slow by design. Moving every night turns the trip into a drive.
- Inchydoney holds the east. Kinsale, Clonakilty, Baltimore and Lough Hyne all within an easy drive.
- Bantry House holds the west. Mizen on the way in, Sheep's Head and the Healy Pass from the door.
