Lough Hyne when the tide reverses

Europe's only saltwater inland lough, in west Cork, at the half hour the Atlantic flows in or out through the narrow rapids.

At Lough Hyne, Europe's only fully saline lough, a distinct shift overtakes the water twice daily. For merely thirty minutes, the surface becomes a mirror, perfectly still and reflective. It is precisely at this moment, as the Atlantic tide reverses its flow through the narrow Rapids, that the lough reveals its quiet power.

Lough Hyne when the tide reverses

Slieve League

We suggest you experience this particular moment from a kayak or on a paddleboard. The water's stillness creates a flawless reflection of the surrounding cliffs, and the small wooded island at the lough’s center appears to float suspended. This is when the lough truly engages your senses, offering a serene encounter with the raw elements.

Go in June, midweek, and book the Atlantic Sea Kayaking evening paddle that lands at the island at sunset, after first confirming the tide table.
