Walk a stretch, drive a stretch

Stop where the Blaskets appear. Stay longer than you planned.

Weather

South-westerly, salt in the hair

Best light

Mid-afternoon, into the sideways gold

An expat note from Deborah

We send first-time American visitors here on the second day, never the first. Slea Head needs a body that has slept in Ireland at least one night.

It is not the Cliffs of Moher. It is wilder, smaller, and somehow more personal. You park, you walk a stretch, you stand against the wind, you get back in the car. Half a day disappears beautifully.

Bring the coat you actually trust. The Atlantic does not care what looks good in photographs.

How we'd actually walk it

The rhythm of the day.

  • 01Drive out from Dingle town after a slow breakfast.
  • 02Walk the shoulders of the road wherever the verge allows. The point is the wind, not the distance.
  • 03Fish and chips back in Dingle. A short rest. A Guinness, perhaps, before driving the long way home.

The hotel pairing

Park Hotel Kenmare

An hour and a half away. The drive home is part of the day.

Walk slowly. Bring a coat. Choose the hotel for the country at its door.
