The most underrated oyster lunch in Ireland, and the easiest one to reach from Dublin.
Carlingford is an hour north of Dublin, a medieval village under Slieve Foye with the lough in front and the Mournes across the water. PJ O'Hare's has been there long enough to have stopped explaining itself. Half hardware shop, half bar.
The oysters are Carlingford Lough Pacific rock, pulled from trestles ten minutes' drive away. The lough is brackish, sea coming in and mountain rivers coming down, and it gives them a clean cucumber finish we have not tasted anywhere else in Ireland. Half a dozen and a pint of Guinness, at the small table inside the front door.
No tourists to speak of, no mignonette, and the barman shucks them himself. If you are in Dublin for a week and want one day out that feels like the country rather than a coach route, this is the one we send people on.

Questions we get
- Can I do Carlingford as a day trip from Dublin?
- Easily. An hour each way by car, and the village is small enough to walk in twenty minutes. Leave Dublin at ten, oysters at one, back for dinner. The train to Dundalk plus a taxi also works if you would rather not drive.
- Are Carlingford oysters different from Galway oysters?
- Yes. Carlingford grows Pacific rock in brackish water, which gives a lighter, cleaner, almost cucumber finish. Galway's fame rests on the native flat, which is rounder, coppery and only in season from September to April.
