The Burren on a grey afternoon

When the limestone is the right colour for it.

Collected by Deborah. Read her editorial perspective

We understand the Burren’s true character emerges on days with muted light. We skip the sunny days here, reserving them for drives elsewhere, because the exposed limestone slabs truly come alive under a grey sky. This is when its subtle ochre and grey tones emerge, giving the landscape its depth.

The Burren on a grey afternoon

Slieve League

Begin your journey from Kinvara, heading towards Ballyvaughan in the early afternoon, and make a stop at Corcomroe Abbey. Do more than just see the abbey itself: step into the field directly beyond it, allowing yourself to fully experience the quietude of this historic place. This short detour offers a singular moment of reflection.

The Cliffs of Moher, a twenty minute drive south, are a dramatic sight, but they are for another day.
