Donegal when the light breaks

The northwest after a long week of weather.

Collected by Deborah. Read her editorial perspective

We find Donegal truly comes alive when the weather shifts. After days of heavy clouds, the first break reveals an Atlantic Ocean that appears freshly scoured. The fields above Slieve League then show a particular shade of green, unmatched elsewhere in Ireland.

Donegal when the light breaks

Slieve League

As you navigate the loop from Killybegs to Malin Beg, the road narrows, signaling your approach to a more intimate landscape. The cliffs at Slieve League are best viewed in the late afternoon, when light reflecting off the water illuminates the distant coast of Sligo.

A meal at Harvey's Point awaits if you planned ahead, or try The Olde Castle Bar in Donegal Town. The objective is simply to experience the west of Ireland on a fine evening.
