Dublin when it rains all day

Bookshops, gallery rooms, bar light. What to do when the weather decides for you.

There are Dublin days, perhaps a few each month, when the rain settles in for good. The light remains a flat grey from your breakfast until evening. Americans often feel disoriented by this; we know precisely where to steer you.

Dublin when it rains all day

Dingle

Begin your day in the National Gallery. The Yeats rooms on the upper floor offer quiet contemplation before eleven. Afterwards, wander through Hodges Figgis, allowing an hour to dissolve among the stacks. We prefer lunch at the Library Bar at the Central Hotel, a space perfectly suited for this weather.

By four, seek out a glowing hearth. Kehoe's, Toner's, or the rear snug at Doheny & Nesbitt will do. The rain then becomes the day's purpose, never an impediment.
