August in Donegal

When the rest of Ireland is on holiday and Donegal is the best version of itself.

As August arrives, other Irish counties swell with holidaymakers and choked motorways, but Donegal remains a sanctuary. It carries itself with a quiet resolve, a confidence that this western reach of Ireland needs no external approval. You will find solitude here, not crowds.

August in Donegal

Slieve League

Our own August visits invariably lead us to Lough Eske or Rathmullan House, their comfortable settings defining the trip. We spend our daytime exploring the Slieve League, its sheer scale arresting even after repeated visits, before evenings unfold with the honest cooking of Ardara. This county’s connection to its landscape and surrounding waters is deep and palpable.

This particular blend of tranquility and tradition makes Donegal in August Ireland’s most un-American destination, precisely when many of our readers visit.
