Killarney to County Clare is 85 miles and it is the gentlest travel day of the week. You leave after a proper breakfast, you stop once in Adare, and you are walking an estate in Clare by early afternoon.
We are careful about how we describe Adare, because a lot of American itineraries send people to stay there. We are sending you through it. The village of thatched cottages on the main street is genuinely charming and takes forty-five minutes, and Adare Manor down the road is one of the best hotels in Europe. But it is a fourth base, and a fourth base in seven nights costs a night somewhere that had earned three. Walk the village, have coffee, keep going.

Leave Killarney late
Today is the one morning to have breakfast on the balcony and check out at ten rather than nine. The drive does not require an early start and there is nothing waiting for you in Clare that opens at noon.

Adare, on foot for forty-five minutes
Park at the village end and walk the main street. The thatched cottages date to the 1820s and were built by the third Earl of Dunraven for estate workers, which is why they are unusually uniform. There is a Franciscan friary ruin behind the golf course and a village hall that does very good coffee. Forty-five minutes is the right amount of time. Ninety is too many.

Through Limerick and over the Shannon
The road north crosses the Shannon estuary at Limerick, which is a working city rather than a pretty one and which we drive through rather than stop in. Twenty minutes the far side, the country softens into the low wooded farmland of south Clare and you turn in through the gates.

Dromoland, and the reason to arrive early
Dromoland Castle is a 450-acre estate that has been in the O'Brien family line since the sixteenth century, and unlike most castle hotels the building genuinely is the castle. What you are buying by arriving at half past two rather than half past six is the estate itself: a two-mile walled walk around the lake, a walled garden, and falconry on the lawn. The gardens are the thing people remember, and they close at dusk.

Falconry, or the lake walk, or neither
The hawk walk at Dromoland is 45 minutes with a Harris hawk on your glove and it is the single most photographed thing our readers do all week. It requires an advance reservation and it cannot be relied on at check in, so book it with the hotel at the moment your room is confirmed. The Earl of Thomond, the night to dress up
Dinner is in the main dining room, which is all plasterwork and candlelight with a harpist in the corner, and which sounds like a parody of Ireland until you are sitting in it. The hotel states that jackets are not required, so there is no dress code to be caught out by. It is simply an elegant room, and the night of the week worth putting on smart evening clothes for. What changes with the season
Adare is a forty-five minute walk in any weather, and the drive is motorway from Limerick north, so this day barely moves. Falconry at Dromoland is the exception: the birds do not fly in high wind, which is a real risk from late October through the winter. Book it, and accept that it can be called off on the morning.

If it rains
Adare in rain is forty-five minutes of wet thatch and it is still worth it. At the far end, Dromoland is a hotel built for Irish weather: a library with a fire, afternoon tea, and a spa. This is the softest possible day to lose to rain.
What we skip
Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, which is fifteen minutes from Dromoland and which every coach on the western route stops at. If you have children it is a good afternoon. If you do not, the medieval banquet is exactly what you fear it is.
The room to ask for
The distinction at Dromoland is castle rooms against the newer wing, and it matters more here than at most hotels. Ask specifically for a room in the original castle with a golf course or walled garden view. The Queen Anne rooms are the sweet spot: castle building, sensible money, and windows you can open.

Last driven 4 May 2026. Two hours ten from Killarney to Dromoland with the Adare walk on top. The village car park now charges, which it did not the last time we stopped, so bring coins or the app.
