Arrive, south to Kerry.

Rental at Shannon, south via Adare to Kenmare. About four hours including the Adare lunch and the Killarney National Park pause.

Who it's for: Confident left-hand drivers.

Trade-off: Four hours of driving on arrival day.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private transfer Shannon to Sheen Falls with Adare lunch and Ladies' View. About five hours door to door.

Why it's better: Arrival day is not the day to learn the N71 side roads. Pick the rental up in Kenmare on Day 2.

Trade-off: Higher cost for day one only.

Aer Lingus into Shannon by 9:30am. Transfer collects. Out of the airport by 10am.

Midday

Lunch on the Adare Manor terrace at 1pm. Garden plate, a glass of Sancerre. Bill by 2:15pm.

Afternoon

South through Killarney National Park on the N71. Pause at Ladies' View at 4pm. Into Sheen Falls by 5pm. Boots on for the river loop behind the lodge, 45 minutes, flat.

Evening

Dinner at La Cascade at 7:30pm. River-side table, the tasting menu, the wine pairing.

The Sheen river loop at last light. Salmon rising, the lodge windows lit behind you.

Where: Adare Manor terrace for lunch. La Cascade at Sheen Falls for dinner.

Trying to walk Torc on Day 1. The Sheen river loop is the only walk that belongs today.

Best way to do it: Self-drive. Twenty minutes from Sheen Falls to the trailhead.

What you'll remember: The Torc summit, the three Killarney lakes spread below.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive to Torc Waterfall, walk the mountain loop, drive ten minutes to Muckross for lunch and the abbey loop.

Who it's for: Everyone. The loop is signposted.

Trade-off: Ten minutes of driving after a three-hour climb.

Guided Version· Recommended

Add a Killarney National Park horseback ride for the afternoon instead of the Muckross loop. Two hours through the woods on Killarney ponies.

Why it's better: Keeps you in the park without a second walk on tired legs.

Trade-off: You skip the Muckross Abbey loop.

The Day

Morning

Drive to Torc Waterfall by 9am. Up the boardwalk, then the mountain track. 7km, three hours.

Midday

Lunch at the Garden Room at Muckross House at 1pm. Soup, brown bread, a glass of cider.

Afternoon

Muckross Abbey loop, 5km, two hours, flat. Or the Killarney horseback ride from Muckross stables, two hours.

Evening

Back to Sheen Falls by 6pm. Pint at the Oak Room bar. Dinner at Mulcahy's in Kenmare. Live trad after at Crowley's.

The Better Version of This Day

Killarney National Park Horseback Ride

Your Killarney guide runs the two-hour woodland rides out of Muckross stables. Killarney ponies, helmets and the riding gear handled.

Instead of a second long walk after Torc, you stay in the park on horseback. The lake at Muckross from the saddle is the version walkers miss.

Drop the car at Templenoe, walk 13km to Sneem, Sneem taxi back to the car for €40.

Who it's for: Walkers who want the Kerry Way without packs and through-walking.

Trade-off: The taxi must be pre-booked a week out.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private Ring of Kerry chauffeur for the morning. Drops you at Templenoe, meets you in Sneem, drives you back to Kenmare.

Why it's better: Removes the only logistics question on the day.

Trade-off: Higher cost than the Sneem taxi.

Morning

On the Kerry Way at 9am from Templenoe. 13km to Sneem, four hours. Rolling moorland, signposted yellow.

Midday

Lunch at the Blue Bull in Sneem at 1pm. Crab claws, brown bread, a glass of white.

Afternoon

Sneem taxi back to Templenoe for the car, then back to Sheen Falls by 3pm. Swim, sauna, or a slow afternoon by the river.

Evening

Casual dinner in Kenmare at the Boathouse. Catch of the day, a glass of Sauvignon.

Signature Moment

Walking into Sneem at midday. The church bell ringing for one o'clock, lunch waiting at the Blue Bull.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Blue Bull in Sneem. Boathouse in Kenmare.

Order: Blue Bull: crab claws, brown bread. Boathouse: catch of the day.

When: Blue Bull 1pm, the back snug. Boathouse 7pm.

Skip: Trying to walk further than Sneem. Templenoe to Sneem is the right slice.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to walk the full Sneem-to-Caherdaniel leg in a day. That section is for through-walkers with packs.

Who it's for: Everyone in good weather.

Trade-off: Connor Pass is a single-track mountain road. Drive it before 5pm.

Private transfer Kenmare to Dingle with the Connor Pass crossing handled.

Why it's better: If the cloud is down on the Pass, a local driver is the right call.

Trade-off: Cost. Most readers self-drive.

Morning

Slow breakfast at Sheen Falls. Check out by 10am. North to Killarney, west on the N70.

Midday

Lunch at Lord Baker's in Dingle at 1:30pm, or stop at the Castle Garden Café in Castlemaine en route.

Afternoon

Over Connor Pass into Dingle by 4pm. Stop at the saddle viewpoint for Dingle Bay below. Check in to the Skellig.

Evening

Dinner at the Global Village at 7:30pm. Catch of the day, the wine pairing. Pint at Dick Mack's after, the back snug.

Skipping Connor Pass for the easier road from Tralee. The Pass is the transfer day.

Best way to do it: Self-drive with a pre-booked Dingle Way taxi for the one-way shuttle.

What you'll remember: The Blasket Islands from the clifftop, the Atlantic on three sides.

Drive to Dunquin for the clifftop trail. Drive to Annascaul for the Dingle Way to Inch. Eunan's taxi back to the car at Annascaul.

Who it's for: Confident walkers in good weather.

Trade-off: The clifftop is exposed in wind.

Guided Version· Recommended

Dingle Peninsula four-hour private tour. Slea Head counter-clockwise, Gallarus Oratory, the famine cottages, back for lunch.

Why it's better: If the wind shuts the clifftop, the private driver gives you the peninsula and the stops walkers skip.

Trade-off: You do not walk the clifftop.

Morning

Drive to Dunquin by 9am, twenty-five minutes. Slea Head clifftop trail to Coumeenoole, 6km, three hours.

Midday

Lunch at Out of the Blue on the harbour at 12:45pm. Whatever the chalkboard says.

Afternoon

Drive to Annascaul. Dingle Way to Inch Beach, 8km, 2 hours 30. Eunan's pre-booked taxi back.

Evening

Pint at Foxy John's at 6pm. Casual dinner at Reel Dingle Fish for the chowder.

The Better Version of This Day

Dingle Peninsula Four-Hour Private Tour

Your Dingle driver-guide drives the Slea Head loop counter-clockwise from the Skellig. Stops at Gallarus Oratory and the famine cottages. About four hours.

Instead of risking the clifftop in wind, the driver gives you the peninsula and the lesser-known stops.
