Glenlo Abbey
Luxury hotel review · Bushypark, Galway
"Dinner in two Orient Express carriages, above Lough Corrib."
The First Feeling
Estate quiet, surprisingly close to a city. The drive in takes you out of Galway traffic in under a mile.
What People Get Wrong
The golf is nine holes, not a championship links.
Golfers who book expecting a full resort course will be disappointed. Treat the course as a pleasant hour and play Galway Bay or Connemara properly. The estate also hosts weddings, so ask what is booked on your dates.
The Atmosphere
A white eighteenth-century house and a small stone abbey on an estate of lawns and woodland dropping toward a wide lake, with two dark green railway carriages standing beside the house.
The Room to Request
Lake-facing in the main house.
Rooms vary between the original house and the later wings. Ask for a lake-facing room in the main house if you want the view and the proportions, and expect the newer rooms to be more uniform.
Check AvailabilityThe Daily Rhythm
Morning
The lake walk on the estate, then into Galway before the shops fill.
Afternoon
Connemara, the Burren, or a boat on Lough Corrib.
Evening
The Pullman, or a taxi into the city for music in the pubs.
Small things you remember later
- Original marquetry in a railway carriage
- Lough Corrib at the end of the lawn
- How fast the city disappears behind you
- Lamps coming on along the carriage windows

The Emotional Role
Estate calm with a theatrical dinner
Two nights here covers the city and sets you up for the drive west. On our canonical seven nights this is the alternative to sleeping inside Galway itself, and it is the better one if you are driving.
