Should I do the Dingle Peninsula or the Ring of Kerry?

If you can only do one, do Dingle. Slea Head is the more concentrated, more photogenic, less coach-crowded drive, and Dingle town is the better single base for a southwest night. The Ring of Kerry is bigger, more varied, and covers more ground, but you'll spend more of the day in the car and share the road with tour buses. Do the Ring if you already have three days in Kerry and a luxury hotel (Sheen Falls, Park Hotel Kenmare) to anchor it. Do Dingle if you have one afternoon and one evening.

How long does the Ring of Kerry actually take to drive?

Google Maps says 3 hours 30 minutes without stops. The honest answer is 6 to 7 hours with the stops that make the drive worth doing: Ladies View, Sneem for coffee, Waterville for lunch, Kerry Cliffs, Portmagee for the Skellig view, Rossbeigh Strand. If you start at 9am you'll be back in Kenmare by 5pm. If you leave at 11am, you'll finish in the dark.

How long does the Slea Head loop take?

The Slea Head loop from Dingle town is 30 miles and takes 3 to 4 hours with the stops that matter: Dunbeg Fort, the beehive huts (Fahan), Slea Head itself for the Blaskets view, Dunquin pier and the Great Blasket ferry pier, Coumeenoole Beach, Gallarus Oratory on the way back. Half a day, comfortably. You can then have dinner in Dingle town, which is the real point.

Which coach-avoiding direction should I drive the Ring?

Counter-clockwise, starting from Kenmare or Killarney, heading south to Sneem first. Tour buses run clockwise from Killarney (they leave at 9:30am, arriving at Sneem for lunch). Going counter-clockwise you meet them once on a stretch and then pull ahead. The other option is to leave your base by 7:30am clockwise, be ahead of the coaches all day, and finish by 3pm.

Where should I stay: Killarney, Kenmare, or Dingle town?

For Dingle Peninsula, stay in Dingle town. Nothing else works. For the Ring of Kerry, stay in Kenmare, not Killarney. Kenmare is quieter, has the better hotels (Sheen Falls, Park Hotel), has better dining (Mulcahy's, Packie's), and puts you on the counter-clockwise Ring start point. Killarney is fine for park access but the town itself is loud in season and staged in the pubs.

Is the Dingle Peninsula better for a first-time American visitor?

In most cases, yes. Dingle rewards a one-night stop more generously than the Ring rewards a two-night stop. You drive Slea Head in an afternoon, you have a memorable dinner and trad session in Dingle town, and you leave the next morning with a clear, concentrated memory. First-time visitors who add three southwest days to a 7-day Ireland trip should spend two on Dingle and one drive-through day on the northern Ring, not the reverse.

What about Skellig Michael? Which drive does it belong to?

Skellig Michael boats leave from Portmagee, on the Ring of Kerry, and need to be booked six months out. If Skellig is on your list, you're doing the Ring, and you need a Kenmare or Portmagee base for the pre-dawn start. Dingle is too far away logistically. Boats run mid-May through September, weather-dependent; the cancellation rate is roughly 30 per cent in June and August, higher in shoulder months.

Which is better for a golf trip?

Kerry, decisively. Waterville is one of the great links in Ireland, Old Head sits on the Ring's Cork-side orbit, and Killarney has three parkland courses inside the national park. Dingle Links (Ceann Sibéal) is a beautiful outlier and worth a round if you're already in Dingle, but no golfer builds a trip around it. What's the weather difference between them?

There is none worth planning around. Both peninsulas jut into the Atlantic and get the same fronts. Dingle is marginally wetter, Kerry marginally milder in winter. Pack a real shell in either case and stop checking the forecast after day two of the trip.

Every honest guide tells you what not to do. These are the things we'd quietly steer a friend around on either drive.

Dingle Peninsula

The Fungie the Dolphin merchandise (Fungie is gone; the town is quietly moving on). Dingle Distillery tours in high season without a booking. The Conor Pass in fog or when you're towing anything.

Ring of Kerry

Ladies View as a destination in itself (it's a photo stop, ten minutes). Any 'traditional Irish night' dinner in Killarney town. The full Ring clockwise between 10am and 4pm in July or August. The Skellig Michael boat if you're not already booked six months out.
