Golf in Cork: the courses around the city worth your tee time

The short answer

Cork Golf Club first. Fota second. Old Head when the budget allows.

For golf in Cork, we would build three days: Cork Golf Club for MacKenzie's design, Fota Island for championship parkland, then either Castlemartyr in East Cork or Old Head beyond Kinsale. All of them sit within a day's easy reach of the city.

Cork is rarely the reason Americans book an Irish golf trip, and that is exactly why we like it. As Americans living in Ireland, we see it as the quieter counterweight to the Kerry and Clare links: shorter drives, parkland and estate golf, and the best food in the country close by.

The heritage round, Little Island

Cork Golf Club

Founded in 1888 and shaped by Alister MacKenzie's 1925 redesign, the same mind behind Augusta National. The routing uses old limestone quarries and looks across Cork's inner harbour. If we had one round near the city, this is the one we would protect.

The championship parkland, east of the city

Fota Island Resort

Twenty-seven holes across the old Fota estate, with the 18-hole Deerpark Course at 7,075 yards, par 71, and the nine-hole Barryscourt Course. Fota has hosted the Irish Open three times. Choose it for mature woodland golf and an easy day from Cork.

The estate round, East Cork

Castlemartyr Resort

An 18-hole, par 72 inland links style course of 6,728 yards by Ron Kirby, whose Irish credits include Old Head and Mount Juliet. We would pair it with a night at the resort, where TERRE holds two Michelin stars.

The local alternative, not Old Head by another name

Kinsale Golf Club

Kinsale Golf Club and Old Head are different clubs. We would look here for a separate local round, not assume that a booking bearing the town's name gives access to the headland. Use the club's visitor page for its own course details and live booking options.
