Where to stay, eat and play in Kinsale

Ireland's gourmet capital, planned around one serious dinner, a harbour base and a round at Old Head.

The short answer

Sleep in town. Reserve Bastion. Give Old Head its own day.

For a Kinsale golf and dining trip, we would compare Perryville House and Actons for the stay, make Bastion the Michelin-star dinner, choose Fishy Fishy for seafood and The Bulman for the Summercove pause. Old Head is the headline round; Kinsale Golf Club is a separate local option.

Kinsale's reputation as Ireland's gourmet capital is useful only if you actually leave time to eat here. As Americans living in Ireland, we would rather give this harbour town three nights than make it a lunch stop between longer drives. This is a town-based decision guide, not another Cork city weekend. For that wider route, use our Cork and Kinsale luxury weekend.

01 · Stay

Where to stay in Kinsale

Choose the base before adding rounds elsewhere. We would keep the rooms in Kinsale if the point of the visit is dinner here, then arrange transport for golf rather than commuting back from Kerry.

The hotel alternative on the waterfront

Actons Hotel

We would compare Actons when the party wants a hotel rather than a guesthouse. The waterfront address keeps the restaurants within the town-based plan. Ask the hotel directly about room configurations and any access needs before choosing.

Check rates and availability

Rates vary by date and room. We publish no fixed nightly price here. The Perryville House availability link is an affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Actons links directly to the hotel. See our affiliate disclosure.

02 · Eat

Kinsale's gourmet capital reputation, table by table

Bastion holds a Michelin star. Fishy Fishy and The Bulman are different decisions, not substitutes for the tasting menu. We would use each for a different part of the visit.

The Michelin-star dinner

Bastion

Bastion is the serious dinner we would build the visit around. Its Michelin star belongs to this restaurant, not to every table in Kinsale. Go for the tasting menu, give the evening room, and discuss dietary requirements with the restaurant before reserving. We would not pair it with an ambitious drive after dinner.

The seafood meal in town

Fishy Fishy

We would make this the seafood meal that does not compete with Bastion. Keep lunch lighter if the tasting menu is that evening, or give Fishy Fishy its own dinner. Check the restaurant's current menu and opening information instead of arriving with a dish promised by an old guide.

The Summercove pause

The Bulman

The Bulman is our choice when the day wants to turn towards Summercove rather than another town restaurant. Put it alongside the Scilly Walk or Charles Fort, not after a second full outing. Confirm food service directly. A pub stop and a restaurant reservation are different plans.

03 · Play

The local alternative, not Old Head by another name

Kinsale Golf Club

Kinsale Golf Club and Old Head are different clubs. We would look here for a separate local round, not assume that a booking bearing the town's name gives access to the headland. Use the club's visitor page for its own course details and live booking options.

Official visitor information and tee times

Golf links open club information, not a reservation made by The Ireland Edit. Confirm access, dates, rates and any caddie arrangements with the club before paying for non-refundable travel.

The order we would choose

Three nights, without turning dinner into a deadline

  1. Arrival: the harbour and a simple meal

Check in, walk the town and leave the first evening flexible. We would not make a tasting-menu reservation depend on an international flight landing on time.

  2. The full day: Old Head, then Kinsale

Put the confirmed round here. Leave enough time to return, change and settle before Bastion, if its service day and your tee time work together. Otherwise give the restaurant the following evening.

  3. The slower day: Summercove, or a second round

Choose the Scilly Walk and Charles Fort with The Bulman, or enquire about Kinsale Golf Club. We would not insist that non-golfers spend the day watching golf. The town and its tables deserve their own time.
