5 Days Walking the South of Ireland

Five days on foot through Kerry. Three nights in Kenmare for the Killarney National Park walks and the Kerry Way, two nights in Dingle for the peninsula. No driving day longer than 90 minutes. The South gives walkers Atlantic clifftop, lake reflections and mountain saddles inside five days without ever asking for a third base.

The places we recommend to friends.

→ Three nights in Kenmare at Sheen Falls, two nights in Dingle at the Skellig.

→ Bookings that decide the trip: Sheen Falls river-view, Dingle Skellig sea-view, the Sneem taxi for Day 3 and Eunan's Dingle Way taxi for Day 4.

Route Overview

Shannon or Cork, then south to Kerry.

Quick Read

What this day is: Arrival, drive to Kenmare via Adare and Killarney National Park, check in to Sheen Falls, evening walk along the river.

Best way to do it: Private transfer with a lunch stop at Adare Manor and a pause at Ladies' View.

What you'll remember: The first walk along the Sheen river behind the lodge, salmon rising at last light.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Pick up the rental at Shannon or Cork, drive south to Adare for lunch, then on through Killarney National Park to Kenmare. About four hours including stops.

Who it's for: Confident left-hand drivers.

Trade-off: Four hours of driving after a transatlantic flight. The Adare lunch helps.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private transfer Shannon to Sheen Falls with the Adare Manor lunch stop and the Ladies' View pause. About five hours door to door.

Why it's better: Arrival day is not the day to learn the Ring of Kerry side roads. A driver gives you the window seat.

Trade-off: Higher cost than the rental for day one. Pick the rental up in Kenmare on Day 2 if you want.

The Day

Morning

Aer Lingus into Shannon by 9:30am. Transfer collects at arrivals. Out of the airport by 10am.

Midday

Lunch on the Adare Manor terrace at 1pm. Garden plate, a glass of crisp white. The terrace looks out over the river. Bill by 2:15pm.

Afternoon

South via Killarney National Park on the N71. Pause at Ladies' View at 4pm for the three lakes in one frame. Into Kenmare by 5pm. Bags up, boots on for the Sheen river loop behind the lodge, 45 minutes, flat, the salmon rising on the river.

Evening

Dinner at La Cascade at Sheen Falls at 7:30pm. River-side table, request when booking. The tasting menu, the wine pairing. In bed by 10pm.

Order: Adare: garden plate, glass of Sancerre. La Cascade: tasting menu, the wine pairing, the cheese course.

When: Adare 1pm. La Cascade 7:30pm, the river-side table.

Skip: Killarney town dinners on arrival night. Stay at the lodge. The drive back from Killarney after wine is the wrong way to end day one.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to fit Torc Mountain on arrival day. Save it for Day 2 with fresh legs. The Sheen river loop is the only walk that belongs today.

"We landed at nine, were drinking Sancerre on Adare's terrace by one. The river-view room was the room of the trip."

Recent traveler, New York

The Ireland Edit Take

River-view room at Sheen Falls, not the garden side. The river is the room. Garden rooms face the lawn and miss the salmon water. Twenty pounds a night more, and the morning light comes off the river onto the ceiling.

What We'd Book First

Three bookings decide this Kerry walking trip. Lock these the same week you book Shannon.

  • 1.Sheen Falls Lodge, three nights, river-view room. Fills four months out for May to September. Three nights in one room is the rhythm walking demands.
  • 2.Dingle Skellig Hotel, two nights, sea-view room. Castlewood House is the boutique alternative on the harbour.
  • 3.Sneem taxi for Day 3 and Eunan's Dingle Way taxi for Day 4. Pre-book Eunan in Dingle and the Sneem taxi a week out. Twenty minutes and €30 each, the smallest bookings of the trip.

Boots on at 9am. The first proper walk of the trip.

Torc Mountain & The Killarney Lakes
02

Torc Mountain & The Killarney Lakes

The classic Kerry walking day.

Quick Read

What this day is: Torc Mountain from Torc Waterfall in the morning, Muckross Abbey lakeshore loop in the afternoon.

Best way to do it: Self-drive. Twenty minutes from Sheen Falls to the Torc trailhead.

What you'll remember: The summit of Torc, the three Killarney lakes spread out beneath you, MacGillycuddy's Reeks on the horizon.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive to the Torc Waterfall car park, walk up the boardwalk and on to the mountain track. After Torc, drive ten minutes to Muckross for lunch and the abbey loop.

Who it's for: Everyone. The Torc loop is signposted and steady.

Trade-off: You drive ten minutes after a three-hour climb. Manageable.

Guided Version· Recommended

Add a Killarney National Park horseback ride for the afternoon instead of the Muckross loop. Two hours through the woodland on Killarney ponies.

Why it's better: If your legs are spent after Torc, the horseback ride keeps you in the park without another walk.

Trade-off: You skip the Muckross Abbey loop, which is the quieter version of the afternoon.

The Day

Morning

Breakfast at Sheen Falls by 7:30am. Drive to Torc Waterfall by 9am, twenty minutes. Up the boardwalk to the waterfall, then on to the mountain track. 7km loop, about three hours. Out by 9am for the cooler walking.

Midday

Lunch at the Garden Room at Muckross House at 1pm. Soup, brown bread, a glass of cider. The garden side, not the courtyard.

Afternoon

Walk the Muckross Abbey loop from the lakeshore, 5km, two hours. Flat, signposted, the abbey ruin at the turning point. Or, instead, the Killarney horseback ride from Muckross stables for two hours through the woods.

Evening

Back to Sheen Falls by 6pm. A pint at the Oak Room bar at the lodge, then dinner in town at Mulcahy's. Live trad at Crowley's after, twenty minutes' walk back along the road.

The Better Version of This Day

Killarney National Park Horseback Ride

Your Killarney guide runs the rides out of Muckross stables. Killarney ponies, helmets and the riding hats included, the two-hour woodland loop through Killarney National Park.

Instead of a second long walk on legs that have just done Torc, you stay in the park on horseback. The lake at Muckross from the saddle is the version walkers miss.

"After Torc we did the horseback ride. The right way to spend the afternoon."

Recent traveler, Dallas

Two hours from Muckross stables. Twenty minutes from Sheen Falls. Helmets and the riding gear handled.

Reserve the Killarney horseback ride →

Signature Moment

The Torc summit at 11am. The Lakes of Killarney spread below, MacGillycuddy's Reeks on the horizon, the only sound the wind off the lakes.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Garden Room at Muckross House for lunch. Mulcahy's in Kenmare for dinner.

Order: Muckross: soup, brown bread, a glass of cider. Mulcahy's: seafood plate, paired wine, the chocolate to close.

When: Muckross 1pm. Mulcahy's 7:30pm, the booth by the window.

Skip: Killarney town for dinner. Kenmare is twenty minutes closer and twice as good.

What People Get Wrong

Doing Torc up and back on the same trail. The boardwalk on the way up, the forest track on the way down. The loop is the version. Most walkers do up and down the same way and miss half the walk.

"Torc in the morning, Mulcahy's at night, Crowley's after. The day Kerry made sense."

Recent traveler, Boston

The Ireland Edit Take

Live music at Crowley's after dinner at Mulcahy's. Walk back to Sheen Falls in twenty minutes along the river road. The right Kenmare night.

Kerry Way to Sneem, Transfer to Dingle
03

Kerry Way to Sneem, Transfer to Dingle

Half a day on the Kerry Way, then over Connor Pass.

Quick Read

What this day is: Kerry Way section from Templenoe to Sneem in the morning, lunch in Sneem, taxi back to Kenmare for the car, drive Dingle via Connor Pass.

Best way to do it: Pre-booked Sneem taxi to bring you back to Kenmare for the car. Then drive Dingle via Connor Pass.

What you'll remember: Walking into Sneem village from the Kerry Way at midday, the church bell ringing, lunch waiting at the Blue Bull.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drop the car at Templenoe for the Kerry Way start, walk 13km to Sneem, taxi back to Templenoe for the car. Then drive Kenmare to Dingle via Killarney and Connor Pass.

Who it's for: Walkers who want the Kerry Way without committing to multi-day through-walking.

Trade-off: You need a pre-booked Sneem taxi. Twenty minutes, €40, the smallest booking of the trip.

Guided Version· Recommended

Private Ring of Kerry chauffeur for the day. Driver drops you at Templenoe, meets you in Sneem, drives you over Connor Pass to Dingle.

Why it's better: Connor Pass on a self-drive day, after a four-hour walk, is the only stretch of the trip that asks a lot. A driver removes the only thing that can go wrong.

Trade-off: Higher cost. Most walkers self-drive and pre-book the Sneem taxi instead.

The Day

Morning

On the Kerry Way at 9am from the Templenoe trailhead. 13km to Sneem, about four hours. Rolling, moorland, signposted yellow. The Kenmare river on your left for the first hour.

Midday

Lunch at the Blue Bull in Sneem at 1pm. Crab claws, brown bread, a glass of white. Sneem taxi back to the car at Templenoe by 2:30pm.

Afternoon

Back to Kenmare for the car. North to Killarney, then west toward Tralee. Up over Connor Pass into Dingle by 6pm. Stop at the saddle viewpoint for the bay below.

Evening

Dinner at the Global Village in Dingle at 7:30pm. Catch of the day, the wine pairing. Live trad after at Dick Mack's, the back snug if it is empty.

Signature Moment

Walking into Sneem from the Kerry Way at midday. The church bell ringing for one o'clock, the village square ahead, lunch waiting at the Blue Bull.

Where You'll Eat

Where: The Blue Bull in Sneem for lunch. Global Village in Dingle for dinner.

Order: Blue Bull: crab claws, brown bread, a glass of white. Global Village: catch of the day, the wine pairing.

When: Blue Bull 1pm, the back snug. Global Village 7:30pm.

Skip: Driving Connor Pass in the dark. Be over the saddle by 6pm at the latest.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to walk the full Kerry Way leg in a day. Templenoe to Sneem is the right slice for an itinerary. The full Sneem-to-Caherdaniel leg is for through-walkers with packs.

"The Kerry Way into Sneem was the morning of the trip. Lunch at the Blue Bull tasted earned."

Recent traveler, San Francisco

The Ireland Edit Take

Sea-view room at Dingle Skellig, not the courtyard. The bay view at breakfast is the room. Backup is Castlewood House for the boutique kitchen and the harbour walk to town in fifteen minutes.

Slea Head and the Dingle Way
04

Slea Head and the Dingle Way

The peninsula on foot.

Quick Read

What this day is: Slea Head clifftop walk in the morning, Dingle Way section to Inch Beach in the afternoon.

Best way to do it: Self-drive to the trailheads. Pre-book Eunan's Dingle Way taxi for the one-way shuttle.

What you'll remember: The Blasket Islands from the Slea Head clifftop, the Atlantic on three sides, no other walkers in sight.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive to Dunquin for the Slea Head clifftop trail, walk down to Coumeenoole, drive on to Annascaul for the Dingle Way section to Inch Beach. Eunan's taxi back to the car at Annascaul.

Who it's for: Confident walkers in good weather.

Trade-off: The clifftop trail is exposed. Check the wind forecast.

Guided Version· Recommended

Dingle Peninsula four-hour private tour. Driver-guide collects at the Skellig, drives the Slea Head loop counter-clockwise with stops at Dunquin, Coumeenoole and Gallarus Oratory. Back for lunch in Dingle.

Why it's better: If the wind shuts the clifftop, the private driver still gives you the peninsula. The Gallarus Oratory stop is the version walkers skip.

Trade-off: You do not walk the clifftop. That is the version most readers want, so most readers self-drive in good weather.

The Day

Morning

Breakfast at the Skellig by 7:30am. Drive to Dunquin by 9am, twenty-five minutes. Slea Head clifftop trail to Coumeenoole, 6km, about three hours. The Blasket Islands on your right the whole way.

Midday

Lunch at Out of the Blue on the harbour at 12:45pm. Whatever the chalkboard says, a glass of Albariño. Sit outside if the sun is on the harbour.

Afternoon

Drive to Annascaul, 25 minutes east. Walk the Dingle Way section to Inch Beach, 8km, about 2 hours 30. The beach is the turning point. Eunan's pre-booked taxi back to the car at Annascaul, twenty minutes, €30.

Evening

Pint at Foxy John's in Dingle at 6pm, the front bar that doubles as a hardware shop. Casual dinner at Reel Dingle Fish for the chowder and brown bread.

The Better Version of This Day

Dingle Peninsula Four-Hour Private Tour

Your Dingle driver-guide drives the Slea Head loop counter-clockwise from the Skellig. Hotel pickup, the clifftop viewpoints handled, stops at the Gallarus Oratory and the famine cottages, back to Dingle for lunch. About four hours.

Instead of risking the clifftop in wind or fog, the driver gives you the peninsula and the lesser-known stops walkers miss. Gallarus Oratory and the famine cottages are the version self-guided walkers skip.

"Counter-clockwise on Slea Head with a private driver. We saw it without ever seeing a coach."

Recent traveler, Atlanta

Hotel pickup, the whole peninsula handled in four hours, lunch back in Dingle.

Reserve the Dingle private tour →

Signature Moment

Slea Head at 11am, the Blasket Islands offshore in low light, the Atlantic on three sides, the only walkers on the cliff.

Where You'll Eat

Where: Out of the Blue for lunch. Reel Dingle Fish for dinner.

Order: Out of the Blue: whatever the chalkboard says, a glass of Albariño. Reel: seafood chowder, brown bread, a pint of Guinness.

When: Out of the Blue 12:45pm, the harbour side. Reel 7pm.

Skip: Driving Slea Head clockwise in tour-bus season. Counter-clockwise. Be on the road by 8:30am.

What People Get Wrong

Doing Slea Head from the car. The clifftop trail above the road is where the photo lives. Drive Slea Head if the wind is up, but walk it if it is calm.

"The clifftop above Coumeenoole was the photograph of the trip."

Recent traveler, Chicago

The Ireland Edit Take

Dick Mack's for the first pint, Foxy John's for the second. Two stops, both real Dingle. Skip the John Benny's pub queue for the trad and walk to McCarthy's instead.

Mount Brandon Shoulder & Departure
05

Mount Brandon Shoulder & Departure

Final walk. Coast home.

Quick Read

What this day is: Mount Brandon shoulder walk to the corrie lakes in the morning, lunch in Dingle, depart Kerry Airport or drive Shannon.

Best way to do it: Self-drive. The Faha trailhead is 30 minutes from Dingle. Do the shoulder, not the summit.

What you'll remember: The Brandon corrie lakes from the shoulder, the Atlantic to the north, the wind dropping at the lakes.

Choose Your Path

Self-Drive

Drive to the Faha trailhead, walk the shoulder to the corrie lakes and back, drive to Kerry Airport for the afternoon flight. Or drive Shannon, two hours.

Who it's for: Everyone. Departure day does not need a guide.

Trade-off: None worth naming.

Guided Version· Recommended

Add a Kerry mountain guide for the full Brandon summit instead of the shoulder. Faha to summit and back, about six hours.

Why it's better: Brandon is one of Ireland's great summits. A guide makes the exposed ridge safe.

Trade-off: Six hours of walking on departure day. Move the flight to the next morning if you want the summit.

The Day

Morning

Breakfast at the Skellig by 7:30am. Drive to the Faha trailhead by 8:30am, 30 minutes. Shoulder walk to the corrie lakes, 5km return, about two and a half hours. Stop at the lakes, do not summit.

Midday

Back in Dingle by 12:30pm. Lunch at the Boatyard on the harbour. Seafood platter, a glass of Sauvignon. Bill by 1:45pm.

Afternoon

Kerry Airport for the 4pm Aer Lingus to Dublin if connecting transatlantic. Or drive back to Shannon, two hours, for the direct flight.

Signature Moment

The Brandon corrie lakes at 10am. The wind dropping at the lake edge, the Atlantic to the north, the entire West behind you.

Where You'll Eat

Where: The Boatyard in Dingle for lunch.

Order: Seafood platter, a glass of Sauvignon. The harbour-side table if it is free.

When: 1pm.

Skip: Trying to summit Brandon on a departure day. The shoulder is the right call.

What People Get Wrong

Booking the same-day transatlantic. Move to a morning Aer Lingus connection from Dublin the next day and add an overnight at the Aloft. The Brandon walk is better unhurried.

"Brandon shoulder was the right last walk. Short, quiet, the Atlantic at the lakes."

Recent traveler, Portland

The Ireland Edit Take

Drop the rental at Kerry Airport, not Shannon, if you booked one-way. Save two hours of driving and a same-day transfer.

Why two bases, not three.

Walking days need rooms that hold you for two nights or more. Kenmare and Dingle deliver every trailhead within forty minutes. A third base means a third checkout and a lost morning.

  • Kenmare covers Torc, Muckross and the Kerry Way. Trailheads within thirty minutes of Sheen Falls.
  • Dingle covers Slea Head, the Dingle Way and Brandon. All trailheads within thirty minutes of the harbour.
