Rathmullan House

Rathmullan House

"A Georgian house with a beach at the end of the lawn."

The First Feeling

Sheltered. The trees hide the water until you are through the house, and then the lough opens out in front of you.

What People Get Wrong

Donegal is further than the map suggests.

This is three and a half hours from Dublin on roads that slow down in the last hour, and it is not a stop on a seven-night first trip. Come here on a second visit, or on a ten-night route through the north. Confirm seasonal opening before you book.

The Atmosphere

A cream Georgian house in mature woodland, with lawns running down to a private stretch of sand on a sea lough, a glazed pavilion dining room on one side and a walled garden behind.

The Room to Request

Water-facing, and ask about the newer rooms.

The house has old rooms with character and newer rooms with better bathrooms and direct outlooks over the lough. Decide which of those you care about more and say so when booking rather than after arrival.

The beach before breakfast, then the walled garden on the way back.

Afternoon

Fanad Head, or Glenveagh National Park an hour away.

Small things you remember later

  • Sand on the path back through the trees
  • The walled garden being picked in the morning
  • Light on Lough Swilly at ten at night in June
  • A fire in a Georgian room in August
