Why Adare is the easiest two track day in Ireland
Every other destination in this collection asks the companion to drive. Adare does not. The estate runs to hundreds of acres of restored parkland along the River Maigue, the house has a spa built to international standard, and the village of Adare is on foot outside the gate. After a week of narrow roads on the wrong side, a day with no car is the luxury nobody books for and everybody remembers.
That makes this day about pace rather than distance. It is also the strongest of the seven for a couple where only one person plays, and the one we recommend when a companion is less mobile or simply wants to rest. Everything below is within a short walk or a buggy ride.
How long the golfer is gone
A round on the Tom Fazio redesigned Golf Course with a caddie takes around four and a half hours, and the walk back to the house adds a little. You have the whole morning and most of the afternoon, and you never have to watch the clock, because the reunion is a corridor away.
Adare will host the Ryder Cup in 2027, and in the run up tee times and rooms are in heavy demand. Book the spa treatments when you confirm the room, not on arrival, because they are what fills first once the house is full.
Morning: falconry on the estate
Start with falconry. A Harris hawk is flown from your gloved hand through the old trees of the estate, returning to you on a whistle, and the falconer explains the birds as you walk. It is one of those experiences that sounds like a hotel activity and turns out to be genuinely moving at close range.
Allow about an hour, and ask the concierge to book it when you confirm your stay. The estate provides gloves and, if needed, boots and coats. It works in most weather, though very heavy rain may move it to another slot, which is easy to rearrange when you are staying on site.
Late morning: the walled garden and the river
From there, walk to the walled garden behind the house. It has been restored and replanted, and it is the quietest part of the estate, a place most guests never find. Then take the paths along the Maigue past the old abbey ruins that sit within the grounds, with the house behind you across the lawns.
This is the most restful hour of any of the seven companion days, and we would not add anything to it. Sit somewhere with a view of the river. The golfer is working hard on the other side of the estate, and there is no reason for you to.
Lunch: Adare village
Walk out of the estate gate into Adare village, a row of thatched cottages along the main street that has been welcoming visitors for a very long time. There are restaurants in some of the cottages, a farm to table room at one end of the street, and antique shops and craft galleries in between.
Walk out and back rather than driving. The village also has the ruin of Desmond Castle beside the river, visited by guided tour in season, and the heritage centre on the main street arranges those tours. Check current tour days before you go, because they are seasonal.
Afternoon: The Spa at Adare Manor
Back at the house, spend the afternoon in the spa. It is, in our view, the best hotel spa in Ireland by some distance, with a pool, a relaxation area and a treatment list long enough that you should plan it before you arrive. This is not a basement add-on to a golf hotel. It was built as a destination in its own right.
Book a longer treatment rather than two short ones, and ask about the relaxation space with views to the river. Time the end of your afternoon for tea in the Gallery, one of the great rooms of any Irish country house, so that you are already settled when the golfer comes in.
If it rains, and what we would skip
Nothing changes. This is the only companion day in the collection that is entirely weatherproof. Falconry can move by an hour, the spa and the Gallery are indoors, and the village is two minutes from the gate. That is why we put mixed groups here when the forecast is bad.
We would skip a Limerick city excursion on a round day. The Hunt Museum is good and King John's Castle is interesting, but neither is worth leaving the estate for when you are staying here. If you want a walk beyond the grounds, Curragh Chase Forest Park is about twenty minutes away with lake and woodland paths.
How to plan the Adare leg
Adare is about forty minutes from Shannon Airport, which makes it an ideal first night or last night. The estate is also a natural hub for the west: Lahinch is roughly an hour and a half away, Ballybunion about the same, and Waterville further into Kerry. Many groups base themselves here for three nights and play out and back.
If you do, the companion gets this estate day plus two days on the road with the golfers. Book the house early, particularly for 2027, and ask for the spa, falconry and a table in the Oak Room to be arranged at the same time as the room.
