Burren Smokehouse

Editorial Review

Burren Smokehouse

Lisdoonvarna, County Clare

The Atmosphere

An oak smokehouse and visitor centre on the road between the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.

The Burren Smokehouse has been smoking salmon over oak in Lisdoonvarna since 1989, and the visitor centre beside the kilns is the easiest food stop on the west coast: a short film, a tasting, and a shop. What matters is the product. Hand-sliced, thickly cut, oak-smoked organic salmon is a completely different food from the machine-cut sheets sold in American supermarkets, and it is vacuum packed for the flight home. This is the one Irish food souvenir we carry every trip, and it costs a fraction of the equivalent at home.

Rooms Worth Requesting

What it actually feels like.

Ask for vacuum-sealed packs for travel. Smoked salmon is permitted into the United States in commercially sealed packaging; check current rules before you fly.

Why we recommend it

A space that justifies the journey.

It is on the route you are already driving, it takes twenty minutes, and the thing you carry out of it is the best value edible souvenir in Ireland.
