Cliffs of Moher from Galway: The Better Way to Visit in 2026

Galway is the right base for the Cliffs of Moher. 90 minutes by road, a Burren stop on the way, and you arrive ahead of every Dublin coach. Here is exactly how we recommend doing it for American luxury travelers.

The places we recommend to friends.

The Quick Answer

Galway is 73 km from the Cliffs of Moher, about 90 minutes by road via Kinvara and the Burren. Small group tours cost USD 130 to 200 per person and run 6 to 7 hours. A private half day for a couple costs USD 500 to 700. Starting in Galway gets you to the cliffs before noon, ahead of every Dublin coach.

Why Galway is the Right Base

Galway to the Cliffs of Moher is 73 km, about 90 minutes by road via Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. Dublin to the Cliffs is 265 km, about 3.5 hours each way. The difference is the day. From Galway you can sleep until 8am, eat a proper breakfast, leave at 9:30am, and still be on the cliff path before the first Dublin coach arrives at noon. That single fact, arrival before noon, is the entire game.

The Burren earns its own stop on the way. Poulnabrone Dolmen is a 5,800-year-old portal tomb sitting alone in a karst limestone field. It is free, it is 15 minutes off the route, and it is the kind of thing American visitors say they remember more vividly than the cliffs themselves.

The Three Ways

What We Would Book From Galway

Small Group Day Tour from Galway

Best Value Option

USD 130 to 200 per person, 6 to 7 hours door to door. A 9am pickup from central Galway, a Burren and Poulnabrone stop, cliffs by 10:30am ahead of the Dublin coach wave, Doolin lunch, back in Galway by 4pm. The day actually has shape. Lally Tours and Galway Tour Company are the operators we hear good things about.

The Ireland Edit Take

Sit on the left side of the bus on the outbound leg for the Galway Bay views, right side on the return for the Burren. Tell the guide you want the south platform walk, not just O'Brien's Tower.

Private Driver Half Day from Galway

Our Recommendation for Couples

USD 500 to 700 for a couple, 6 to 7 hours. Hotel pickup at 9:30am, west through Kinvara, a longer Burren stop than the group tour allows, cliffs at 11am or after 3pm depending on your preference, lunch wherever you like (we usually say the Cliffs of Moher Hotel in Liscannor or the Wild Honey Inn in Lisdoonvarna), back by mid-afternoon.

The Ireland Edit Take

Ask for the Hag's Head approach from the south rather than the visitor centre car park. The car park is cynical pricing, the south approach is quieter and the walk in is the experience.

Two Nights in the Burren at Gregans Castle

The Editor's Choice

Stay in Galway one night, drive 90 minutes south to Gregans Castle for two more, cliffs on day one of the Burren stay, a Doolin boat cruise plus an Aran Islands ferry on day two. The Burren as UNESCO Global Geopark is the surprise of every western Ireland trip we send our American readers on. The cliffs become one note in a richer chord.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book the Corkscrew Suite at Gregans for the Galway Bay view. Dinner in the dining room is one of the quiet great meals in the west. Three months minimum lead time for May, June and September.

Timing From a Galway Base

  • 9:30am pickup: Out of Galway, Burren stop at 10:30am, cliffs by 11am. The early window.
  • 12pm to 2:30pm: Dublin coaches arrive. Avoid if you can.
  • 3pm to 5pm: Coaches clear, the photographer's window opens, gold light on the south platforms.
  • Best months: May, June, September. Mild weather, long days, puffins on the cliffs through July.

Our Recommendation

Stay in Galway the night before. Move at 9:30am. Beat the coaches.

  • Where to stay in Galway: The G Hotel (modern), Glenlo Abbey (country house outside the city), or Hotel Meyrick on Eyre Square.
  • First trip, 7 days: One night Galway, two nights Burren at Gregans Castle. Build the cliffs into a slower west coast leg.
  • Dublin only: See our Cliffs of Moher tour from Dublin guide for the realistic version of that day.

Now that you have the answer

Where we would sleep the night before

The whole strategy here is being on the road by 9:30am. That only works if you are already in the west.

  • The g Hotel & Spa

    Galway city, easiest early start

Parking, a proper breakfast from seven, and a clean run out on the N67. The practical choice for a cliffs morning.

  • Gregans Castle

The Burren, twenty minutes from the cliffs

Our preferred version of this day. Sleep inside the Burren and you reach the cliffs before the Dublin coaches have left the M7.

  • Glenlo Abbey

Lough Corrib, ten minutes from Galway

For couples who want the drive to feel like part of a holiday rather than a logistics exercise. Lake on one side, cliffs an hour on the other.
