Full booking notes and The Shelbourne comparison
Room. The hotel's 142 rooms and suites divide between the restored Georgian Main House and the more contemporary Garden Wing. Choose Main House for period character. Choose Garden Wing when calm, lift access or a more contemporary room matters more. Ask for the exact outlook, not an assumed garden view. Do not describe one wing as universally superior. They solve different arrivals, and the hotel does not publish every room's orientation.
Table. Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud holds two Michelin stars and operates independently within the hotel. Merrion gift vouchers are not accepted there. For a less formal evening, choose The Cellar Bar in the original 18th-century wine vaults. Make the restaurant reservation through Patrick Guilbaud's own booking channel. The hotel does not publish a fixed four-month release window.
Routine. Deborah's summer stay found the interior garden at its best in late-afternoon light. Leave room for coffee, a cocktail or a book, then move to No. 23 for an unhurried drink. Reserve afternoon tea before arrival because the room was consistently busy during the stay.
Breakfast. From Deborah's first-hand stay, the smoked salmon is the dish we would repeat. The menu offered enough variety for several mornings. Current menus, serving hours and rate inclusions are not published here, so confirm them for your dates.
Skip it if You want a busy lobby, a social scene or a view-driven room. The Merrion's strength is discretion.
Caveat. This is intentionally old-world rather than sleek or replicable. Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud is a separate reservation, and menus, tea availability and seasonal programming should be confirmed for your dates.
Send to reservations: “Please confirm Main House and Garden Wing options for our dates, each room's outlook and access, whether breakfast is included, and the current adults-only pool times.”
Choose The Merrion
Choose The Merrion when the stay itself should feel restorative: old-world Dublin, discreet service, a garden to disappear into at four in the afternoon, and the city waiting just beyond the door when you want it. This is the Dublin hotel we would book for ourselves, and the one we stayed in first-hand.
Choose The Shelbourne
Choose The Shelbourne when participation is the point: a first Dublin visit, a celebration, or a trip where you want the frontage, the walkability and the public rooms doing the entertaining. It is not the quiet choice, and it is not trying to be.

Ask for the Chef's Table. Seeing the team in that focused silence is pure theater. Thursday evenings have the most relaxed atmosphere.
