Music is a genuine part of the week rather than a Thursday gimmick. It is the archetype of the thing Americans hope to find and usually do not: an unbeautiful crossroads pub that turns out to be the best evening of the week.

Food and beer
The kitchen does substantial pub cooking done properly rather than gastropub cooking done ambitiously, and the brewery next door supplies the range. Ask what is on that week; the seasonal brews do not travel further than this building.
It is good value in a county where dinner can be expensive, and it feeds a mixed party of ages without difficulty.
Music and the room
Traditional music is a genuine part of the week rather than a scheduled attraction, and the layout, all small connected rooms, means you can be near it or away from it as you prefer.

Where it works from
It is a short drive from Brooklodge at Macreddin, from Woodenbridge and from the Avoca valley, and around forty minutes from Glendalough. That makes it the flexible dinner in a county of dark lanes and early kitchens.
Take a taxi if you intend to drink the brewery's output, and book at weekends: the car park fills.
What we would not pretend
It is a country pub, so it is loud when it is busy and quiet to the point of empty at odd hours midweek. There is no view and no ceremony.

The second Wicklow evening, driven or taxied from Brooklodge or Woodenbridge, chosen when we want a fire and a pint rather than a menu.
