The Atmosphere

Aqua occupies the building at the far end of the West Pier that used to be the Howth Yacht Club, which means you walk past the trawlers and the fish shops to get to it and then sit with the harbour on one side and Ireland's Eye in the window. The kitchen does what the location demands: Dublin Bay prawns, crab, whatever was landed on the pier outside. It is more formal than the harbour's fish bars and priced accordingly, and on a clear evening the room earns it.
The long version
The old yacht club at the very end of Howth's West Pier, turned into a seafood dining room facing Ireland's Eye.
You walk the length of the West Pier to get to it, past trawlers, nets, the fish shops and the seals that have learned where the offcuts go, and the building at the end used to be the Howth Yacht Club. Now it is a dining room with water on three sides and Ireland's Eye sitting in the window.
That walk is part of the meal. By the time you sit down you have seen where the fish comes from, which is a rare and useful thing in a seafood restaurant.

What to order
Dublin Bay prawns, crab, oysters, and whatever whitefish was landed on the pier that day. The cooking is more formal than the harbour's fish bars, with sauces and composed plates, and the pricing follows.
The early menu, served before six, is the value option and the kitchen does not treat it as a lesser service.
The room and the weather
On a clear evening the light on Ireland's Eye and the Baily lighthouse does something no interior designer can. In a north-easterly it is a warm room watching weather happen, which is its own pleasure.
Ask for a window table when booking; the difference between a window and the middle of the room here is most of the point.
Around it
The Howth Cliff Walk starts at the harbour and takes two to three hours for the full loop, with the Baily lighthouse at the far end. Do it in the afternoon and eat here after.
The Marine Hotel in Sutton is within ten minutes, which makes this the obvious dinner for anyone staying on this coast rather than in the city.
Howth is also the easiest good day out from central Dublin, and the reason is the DART. Twenty-five minutes from Connolly, no car, no parking, and the station is a five-minute walk from the bottom of the West Pier. Anyone spending four nights in the city should give one afternoon to this line rather than a second museum, and this dining room is the natural end of it.
The order we would keep is the cliff loop first, the fish shops on the middle pier after, and a table here for half seven. That way the walk is done in daylight, the harbour is still working when you pass it, and you sit down with Ireland's Eye going dark in the window rather than already black.
What we would not pretend
Closed on Mondays, and it is a pier-end building, so wind and rain are part of the experience getting there. Prices are city-centre prices, not harbour-shack prices.
