The Cobblestone sits on the corner of Smithfield square, two minutes from the Jameson distillery, and it is run by a family of musicians from Clare. The front bar holds a session almost every night, and the rule there is the old one: the musicians are playing for each other, not for the room, so you listen rather than talk over it. The whiskey is poured plainly and the Guinness is very good. It is the honest counterweight to Temple Bar, and the best pairing with a morning distillery tour in Smithfield.

Sit in the front bar for the session and keep your voice down while they play. The back room takes ticketed gigs, which are worth checking before you come.
