The Cooley peninsula out from Dublin

Louth in a half-day, the bull and the mountain.

We often point our car north from Dublin, past the city’s immediate urban sprawl, toward the Cooley Peninsula. This is the fabled setting of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the Cattle Raid of Cooley, a landscape rich with ancient tales. Though it feels like another country entirely, it is just an hour’s drive from the capital.

The Cooley peninsula out from Dublin

Slea Head

The drive north from Carlingford to Slieve Foye on the mountain road reveals unexpected elevated views. We usually plan for a meal in Carlingford itself, then a walk to the village’s castle. The journey back down to the south often hugs the shore of Carlingford Lough, a narrow, winding road that affords quiet water views.

This is Louth as many imagine Ireland, yet almost no one outside of this republic makes the trip. We consider it one of our essential recommendations for those who want to see beyond the usual touring circuits. It is a striking place.
