March light in the Burren

The first week of long evenings, before the season starts.

Collected by Deborah. Read her editorial perspective

March in the Burren offers the year's first truly long evenings, with the clock change extending daylight past seven. We find this period particularly appealing, predating the landscape's full bloom of spring gentians. The entire season still feels open to us, full of possibility.

We consistently choose Gregans Castle for our stays, positioning ourselves perfectly for walks across the limestone pavements. These outings occur just before dinner, an optimal time to feel the singular terrain as evening light deepens. This particular timing sets the tone for our entire visit.

This initial week of longer days stands apart from later spring, bringing extended light by seven thirty but with a stillness that diminishes as the season advances. This is the most knowing time to experience the Burren.
