When a driver earns the fee

  • The Ring of Kerry, Dingle and the Beara: single-track roads, coach traffic, and views you should be watching, not steering past.
  • A golf week. Clubs, shoes and luggage for four golfers will not fit a rental, and nobody should drive after the nineteenth hole.
  • Arrival day. A red-eye into Dublin or Shannon followed by a left-hand drive is the combination we steer every reader away from.
  • Distillery and long-lunch days, for the obvious reason.
  • Connemara and the Burren, where a local driver knows the back roads the coaches do not take.

When it is money wasted

  • Dublin itself. The city is walkable, taxis are easy, and a car waiting outside The Merrion is money spent on parking.
  • Days spent inside one estate. At Adare Manor, Ballyfin or Ashford Castle you will not leave the grounds. Book the transfer in and out, not a car for the stay.
  • Confident drivers on quiet stretches. Donegal and Mayo reward a self-drive more than Kerry does.

Luggage decides the vehicle

Mercedes E-Class or S-Class

Executive saloon

A couple with two medium cases. The most comfortable car for a long transfer, and the wrong one the moment golf bags appear.

Mercedes V-Class

Luxury people carrier

The workhorse of private touring in Ireland. Families, two couples, or a couple with serious luggage. Ask for the long-wheelbase version if bags are large.

Mercedes Sprinter

Executive minibus

Golf groups of four and more, with full tour bags. Luggage, not passengers, decides when you need one.

Reading the quote

No operator we list publishes a day rate, and we will not guess one. What we can tell you is what a good quote answers.

Day rate

NOT PUBLISHED by the operators we list. Every quote is built from your dates, hours, vehicle and route.

Fuel, tolls, parking

Ask whether they are inside the quote or billed afterwards.

Driver overnights

On a multi-day tour the driver sleeps away from home. Ask whether accommodation and meals for the driver are included.

Hours per day

Ask how many driving hours a day includes and what an extra hour costs.

The same driver

Ask in writing whether one named driver covers every day.

Licensing

Irish chauffeurs carrying paying passengers must hold a small public service vehicle licence from the National Transport Authority. Ask for it.

Cancellation

Ask what happens if weather closes a coastal day, and what a cancelled day costs.

Gratuity

Discretionary, never a line item. Ask the operator what is customary rather than guessing.

Chauffeur, or driver-guide

A chauffeur gets you from the airport to the hotel. A driver-guide decides you will see the Cliffs of Moher before the coaches arrive, runs the Ring of Kerry against the traffic, and changes the day when the cloud comes down. For a touring week, book the second. Some Irish drivers are certified National Tour Guides by Fáilte Ireland: it is the right question to ask.

Nationwide, from Dublin

Irish Luxury Tours

One driver-guide for the whole week

The strongest review record we found for multi-day, chauffeur-driven tours starting in Dublin. Reviewers consistently name their individual driver, which is the sign of a small company where the same person stays with you all week.

5.0 on Tripadvisor from 155 reviews, Travellers' Choice 2026.

Ask: Whether the same driver covers every day, and whether their overnight costs are in the quote.

All Ireland Chauffeur Tours

Planned multi-day trips with help on the itinerary

Reviewers repeatedly describe the office planning the whole trip around them, including rescue plans after a failed agency booking. A good choice if you want the driver company to help shape the route as well as drive it.

108 Tripadvisor reviews, ranked first for transportation in Waterford.

Ask: Which driver is assigned, and what happens if weather forces a change of plan on a coastal day.

Kerry

The Killarney Touring Co.

Ring of Kerry and Dingle days from your Killarney hotel

A local, luxury MPV operator whose reviewers praise exactly what matters on the Ring: knowing how to avoid the coach crowds and adapting the route to the light and weather. Also runs transfers to Dublin, Shannon, Cork and Kerry airports.

5.0 on Tripadvisor from 104 reviews, Travellers' Choice 2026.

Ask: To run the Ring anticlockwise, against the coaches, and to include the Skellig Ring if the day is clear.

Clare and Shannon

Pat Keogh Chauffeur Service

The Kerry to Clare transfer, the Cliffs day and Shannon Airport

A family chauffeur business of some forty years with a fleet of Mercedes E and S Class saloons and V-Class people carriers, based fifteen minutes from Dromoland. The natural call for the Clare days and a Shannon departure.

4.8 on Tripadvisor from 31 reviews.

Ask: For an S Class or V-Class by name, and a driver who knows the Burren back roads rather than the coach route.

Galway and Connemara

Connemara Chauffeurs

Connemara, Kylemore and the Burren from Galway

Galway based for over fifteen years. The company states its drivers are licensed by the National Transport Authority and certified as National Tour Guides by Fáilte Ireland, which is the standard to ask any Irish driver-guide about.

4.9 from 36 ratings on its private Connemara day tour (Peek).

Ask: For a Galway to Dublin transfer as an alternative to the train on your last day.
