The Perfect Ireland Honeymoon

Castles, scenic drives, spa hotels, and one helicopter flight you will talk about for the rest of your lives. Seven nights, four bases. Every hotel is one we would celebrate our own anniversary in. Built for American couples who want grand gestures and slow mornings in equal measure. This is not a trip. It is a honeymoon.

The places we recommend to friends.

The Quick Answer

The ideal Ireland honeymoon itinerary is seven to ten nights split between two country-house hotels and one quiet coastal village. We recommend two nights at Ballyfin (Ireland's most romantic property), three nights at Ashford Castle or Sheen Falls Lodge, then three nights in a Connemara or Dingle hideaway. Skip Dublin, or save it for one night on arrival. Honeymoons want stillness and signature dinners, not city days.

  • Best window: late May to early June, or September
  • Realistic budget: USD 11,000 to 16,000 per couple, flights included
  • Most romantic single property in Ireland: Ballyfin, 20 suites only
  • Skip: packed sightseeing days, you came here to slow down

Dublin at The Merrion
01/02

Dublin at The Merrion

Two slow nights in the Georgian core. The decompression before the romantic spine begins. This is for couples arriving on the overnight who want the honeymoon to start at check-in, not at some castle three hours away.

The Day

Morning

Day 1: check in by 3pm and request the Junior Suite with the freestanding bath when you book, never at reception. The extra 30 square metres turn the first night from a hotel room into a honeymoon opening. Day 2: private gallery tour at the National Gallery at 10am, booked through the concierge two weeks ahead. The Caravaggio and the Yeats collection without the public crowd.

Midday

Day 1: afternoon tea at 3:30pm in the Drawing Room near the fireplace, not the centre. The art collection on the walls is museum-grade. Do not rush through it. Day 2: a long lunch at Etto at 12:15pm. Left-wall table. Cacio e pepe and a bottle of the house Vermentino. This is a two-hour lunch.

Afternoon

Day 1: walk the Iveagh Gardens behind the hotel, then a quiet bath before dinner. Day 2: DART to Dalkey at 3pm and kayak around Dalkey Island with Kayaking.ie. The guide takes you past the seal colony on the south side of the island. Return by 5:30pm. Walk up to Killiney Hill for sunset. The bench at the obelisk has the bay angle.

Evening

Day 1: Patrick Guilbaud at 7:30pm. The Merrion's own two-Michelin room. Window table over the garden, eight-course tasting menu, the Champagne pairing the sommelier offers when you tell her you are celebrating. Cheese trolley between courses seven and eight. Day 2: The Cellar at The Merrion for a quiet brasserie dinner, or room service in the Junior Suite with the bath afterward. Resist the instinct to fill both nights with Michelin.

Signature Moment

The first bath in the Junior Suite after the Patrick Guilbaud tasting menu. The honeymoon has officially begun.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a standard Main House double instead of the Junior Suite. The room faces Upper Merrion Street where taxis idle until midnight, the bath is a regular tub, and the entire opening of the honeymoon resets to ordinary. The two-hundred-dollar nightly upgrade is the single best money you will spend on the trip.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book the Junior Suite, not a standard room, not a garden room. The Junior Suite has the freestanding bath. The garden rooms are quieter but do not have it. The private gallery tour is the Day 2 morning that no one else will suggest because it requires calling the concierge. The Caravaggio with a guide who explains the provenance is a different experience from walking past it with a crowd.

Ashford Castle
03/04

Ashford Castle

Drive west to Cong. Two nights at the most theatrical castle hotel in Ireland. This is for couples who want the honeymoon to feel like a film, not a holiday.

The Day

Morning

Day 3: pick up the automatic at Europcar on Nassau Street at 9am and drive to Cong, three hours on the M6 and N84. Walk the lakeside path from the main entrance to the boathouse before you do anything else. Day 4: falconry walk at 8am, never 10am. Dawn light through the estate woodland is the point. Book the second-morning slot. After one night on the estate the experience lands properly.

Midday

Day 3 lunch at the Dungeon Bar at 1pm. Stone-arch table by the window. Castle burger, a glass of Guinness. The Dungeon is the right pace for arrival day. Day 4: drive 40 minutes to the Coral Strand at Carraroe, a beach made entirely of white coral. Lunch at Mitchell's in Clifden, bar seat, fish and chips landed that morning at the pier 200 metres away.

Afternoon

Day 3: lake cruise on Lough Corrib at 3pm, ninety minutes past the ruins on Inchagoill. Bring a jacket even in July. Day 4: couples' treatment at The Spa at 4pm. The 90-minute hot stone, not the 60-minute. The treatment rooms overlook the river and the extra time includes a guided relaxation that is worth the upgrade.

Evening

Day 3: George V Room at 8pm, jacket required. Round table by the window over the lake. Tasting menu with the sommelier's pairing. The painted ceiling and candlelight make this the most theatrical dining room in Ireland. Day 4: Cullen's at the Cottage. Whatever the chef is running. The menu changes daily.

Signature Moment

Standing in the dawn woodland on Day 4 with a Harris hawk on your glove. The estate is silent, the photographer is twenty paces back, and Ireland for an instant belongs to the two of you.

What People Get Wrong

Booking the falconry for the first morning at 10am. The morning groups overlap, it becomes a tour, and the dawn light is gone. Always the second-morning, 8am slot. And do not skip the Coral Strand for another castle restaurant lunch. Most guests never hear about it because the concierge mentions falconry first.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book falconry for the second morning at 8am, not 10am. Dawn light, hawks, and the estate to yourselves. The Coral Strand at Carraroe is the secret. Forty minutes from Ashford, entirely white coral, and most guests never hear about it. Mention it to the concierge and watch their reaction. The spa books six weeks out for summer. Reserve it the same week you book the room or it will be full.

What We'd Book First

Three bookings decide this honeymoon. Get these in early.

  • 1.The Merrion Junior Suite, Ashford Castle, Adare Manor, Sheen Falls. All four fill 4 to 6 months out for May to September. Book them in one sitting.
  • 2.Patrick Guilbaud and Chapter One. Two two-Michelin restaurants, the day you confirm flights. Both open four months out.
  • 3.The Doolin helicopter flight on Day 5. Twenty minutes, sunset, the photo you will frame. Book 4 weeks out directly through Doolin Air.
Cliffs of Moher to Adare Manor
05

Cliffs of Moher to Adare Manor

South via the Cliffs and a helicopter. One night at Adare Manor, the most polished hotel in the country. This is for couples who want one genuinely cinematic moment on the trip.

The Day

Morning

Leave Ashford by 9am. Drive south through the Burren on the R480, ninety minutes. Stop at Poulnabrone Dolmen for ten minutes by 10:30am to beat the coaches. The dolmen is 5,800 years old and looks assembled yesterday.

Midday

Lunch in Doolin at Gus O'Connor's Pub at 12:15pm. Back room where the trad musicians play lunchtime sets. Seafood chowder, a pint, mussels from the bay. Forty-five minutes, then onto the cliffs.

Afternoon

Cliffs of Moher at 2pm. Walk south from O'Brien's Tower along the cliff-edge path for forty-five minutes. After ten minutes the path narrows, the crowds thin, and you are alone on a cliff above the Atlantic. Helicopter from Doolin Pier at 4:30pm. Twenty minutes, sunset over the Cliffs, the pilot banks over the Aran Islands. Book direct through Doolin Air. The photo from the open door is the one you will frame.

Evening

Drive 75 minutes on the N18 and N21 to Adare Manor. The gatehouse approach is deliberately dramatic. Dinner in the Oak Room at 8pm, jacket required. Fireplace table, tasting menu, the sommelier's Irish wine pairing. The bread basket with Adare estate butter is worth slowing down for.

Signature Moment

The bank over the Aran Islands at 4:50pm with the Cliffs in golden light, the open door of the helicopter, and the photograph that will sit on a mantel for the rest of your lives.

What People Get Wrong

Booking a Manor Room in the new wing instead of a Stateroom in the original building. The wing rooms are perfectly nice and look like every other five-star room in Europe. The Statesrooms have the original plasterwork, the higher ceilings, and the castle views. The price difference is roughly €150 and the room is a different experience.

The Ireland Edit Take

The helicopter is the splurge most couples regret not booking. Twenty minutes, sunset, the Aran Islands on the bank. Book directly through Doolin Air. At Adare, book a Stateroom in the original building. Higher ceilings, original plasterwork, castle views. The Oak Room closes for private events once a month. Confirm it is open when you book.

Ring of Kerry to Sheen Falls
06

Ring of Kerry to Sheen Falls

Counter-clockwise around the Ring. One night where the river meets the bay. This is for couples who want the most romantic single day of driving in Ireland.

The Day

Morning

Leave Adare by 8:30am. Drive to Killorglin in 75 minutes. Skip Killarney town. Start the Ring at Killorglin counter-clockwise. Tour buses go clockwise. You avoid them on every single-lane section.

Midday

Kerry Cliffs viewpoint at noon, €4 each. Closer to the Skelligs than the Cliffs of Moher and better photographs. Lunch at the Butler Arms in Waterville at 1pm. Bar lounge. Seafood chowder and a pot of tea. Forty-five minutes.

Afternoon

Derrynane Beach at 2:30pm. Check tide times the night before. Low tide exposes the sandbar to Abbey Island and you walk across hand in hand to a ruined medieval abbey. The most romantic thirty minutes on the Ring. Arrive at Sheen Falls Lodge by 5:30pm. Couples' spa at 5:45pm in the river-view treatment room.

Evening

Pre-dinner Dingle gin and tonic on the terrace at 7:30pm. The terrace faces west and the evening light on Kenmare Bay between 7:30 and 8:30 in summer is transcendent. Dinner at the Falls Restaurant at 8:30pm. Window table nearest the waterfall. Tasting menu with Kerry lamb. Do not rush. It is the last romantic evening of the trip.

Signature Moment

The walk hand in hand across the Derrynane sandbar at low tide. White sand, the medieval abbey ruin ahead, and not another couple in sight.

What People Get Wrong

Booking the car-park-side room at Sheen Falls because the river-view room sold out. The car-park side is a different hotel. Book the river-view six months out alongside flights, never later. And driving the Ring clockwise. Every coach in Kerry goes clockwise. You will spend the day on single-lane edges trying to pass them.

The Ireland Edit Take

Counter-clockwise is the trick. Book the river-view room at Sheen Falls when you book flights. The river side fills six months out. The Derrynane sandbar crossing at low tide is the most romantic moment on the Ring and most couples drive past it because they do not check the tides. Check them the night before at Adare.

Return to Dublin

Return to Dublin

A slow Kerry morning, the drive back via Cashel, and a final Michelin dinner. This is for couples who want the honeymoon to end on a high note, not a transfer.

The Day

Morning

Walk Kenmare pier before loading the car. The bay is glassy before 9am. Five minutes at the end of the pier. Leave Kenmare by 9:15am.

Midday

Lunch at Cashel Palace Hotel at 12:30pm. The hotel sits directly below the Rock of Cashel. Garden table for the view up to the ruins. Soup and a sandwich. Do not order three courses. On the road by 1:15pm. Walk the Rock of Cashel after lunch for forty-five minutes. Hall of the Vicars Choral first for context.

Afternoon

Drop the rental at Dublin Airport by 3:30pm. Taxi to The Shelbourne in twenty-two minutes. Do not take the Airlink bus with honeymoon luggage.

Evening

Chapter One at 7:30pm, booked the same day you booked Patrick Guilbaud. Banquette on the right wall. Tasting menu. The opening dinner at Patrick Guilbaud and the closing dinner at Chapter One are the symmetrical bookends that make this seven nights a honeymoon. Last drink at the Horseshoe Bar in The Shelbourne by 10pm. Two glasses of Champagne. Leave by 10:30pm.

Signature Moment

The final glass of Champagne at the curved Horseshoe Bar at 10pm, with seven nights between you and the rest of your life.

What People Get Wrong

Trying to drop the car in town instead of at the airport. Returning a rental at 11pm to a Dublin city office with honeymoon luggage is how the trip ends on a sour note. Drop the car at the airport on the way in. Take the taxi. Then dinner.

The Ireland Edit Take

Book Chapter One the same day you book Patrick Guilbaud, both four months out. The two-Michelin opening and closing symmetry is what you will describe to friends. Drop the rental at the airport before going into town. At Cashel Palace, confirm garden tables are available. In winter dining moves indoors and the Rock view is through glass.

Experiences

Book one helicopter and one couples' spa. That is the honeymoon.

The route already gives you the Ring, the Cliffs, Connemara, and falconry. Add only the helicopter and the spa.

  • The helicopter: Doolin to the Cliffs at sunset, Day 5. Twenty minutes, the Aran Islands on the bank, photograph from the open door. Book 4 weeks ahead through Doolin Air.
  • The spa: Sheen Falls couples' treatment, Day 6 at 5:45pm. River-view treatment room. Ninety-minute hot stone. The cascade during the treatment is the point.
